Weihegold vs Verdades at CHIO Aachen

Press release

CHIO Aachen 2017: Laura Graves challenges Isabell Werth

Showdown at the Aachen Soers: The currently most thrilling dressage riders will be meeting up at the World Equestrian Festival, CHIO Aachen (July 14th-23rd).

On the one hand, the undisputed Queen, the giant of the dressage arena: Isabell Werth. She currently holds no less than three places under the top ten in the world ranking lists. She has won everything there is to win on the international dressage circuit. Six Olympic gold medals, seven World Championship titles, 13-time European Champion and 14-time German Champion. On top of that, a further 10 victories in the Deutsche Bank Prize, the Dressage Grand Prix of Aachen, victorious the last time in the year 2008. The 47-year-old German star is the most successful rider of all time. She is the Roger Federer of the equestrian sport. At least.

And now Isabell has a challenger. The young US American, Laura Graves and her “Verdades” have recently put in terrific performances. On Saturday, they won the Grand Prix and the Freestyle at the Dutch CHIO in Rotterdam. Graves additionally led the US American dressage team to victory in the Nations’ Cup. She came second in the FEI World Cup Final in Omaha – beaten only by Werth, albeit with a clear lead. Graves wasn’t exactly happy about having to make do with second place. The US amazon, who will be celebrating her 30th birthday the day before the Deutsche Bank Prize at the CHIO Aachen 2017, is ambitious. The fact that Isabell Werth and her top horse “Weihegold” left her trailing behind on home territory is gnawing away at her.

So, it is time for the next round in Aachen: Werth vs. Graves. Weihegold vs. Verdades. Pure suspense. Graves is “sharp to win” according to the US National Coach, Robert Dover, in other words totally focused on victory. The showdown will take place in Aachen. “I am particularly looking forward to this duel between two extraordinary riders and horses,” stated the Show Director of the CHIO Aachen, Frank Kemperman.

The dressage competitions start on Wednesday, July 19th. Tickets are available online and from the hotline on +49-(0)241-917-1111. There are still a few tickets left for the Deutsche Bank Prize, but both riders will already be competing against each other on Thursday in the Prize of the Tesch Family (first qualifier for the Lambertz Nations’ Cup) and on Saturday in the MEGGLE-Prize (second qualifier for the Lambertz Nations’ Cup).

Edward Gal had a great weekend at Rotterdam, with top performances with both his 9 yr old Danish Warmblood stallion Glock´s Zonik in the CDI3 tour and with Glock´s Voice in the CDIO tour.

Voice and Gal showed a very sharp Grand Prix Special scoring 75,078% and won individual with Therese Nilshagen and Dante Weltino as 2nd with 71,843%.

12 yr old KWPN stallion Apache and Emmelie Scholtens has not been competing since January at Amsterdam. Fully concentrated and top harmony between horse and rider all the way. No technical issues, but very balanced and well timed all the way. The first piaffe becomes a bit cautious, while the next two are with more activity. Super nice series and well performed pirouettes with high quality. And it really looked like as if Apache also was totally in the zone, while he afterwards as usual shows around and making some noise. Lovely to see them back and right now a serious couple for the Europeans in Gothenburg mid August.

9 yr old Danish Warmblod stallion Glock´s Zonik by Zack / Romanov with Edward Gal in the saddle were ready today. They recently made their international debut at CDI4 at Roosendaal with an impressive score for Grand Prix 75,78% and Grand Prix Special with 76,333%, so therefore the expectations also were high. And they did not dissapoint. Powerful stallion expression with extraordinary gaits, suppleness and harmony eventhough there are of course many more points to come than the impressive score of 75,440%. Lovely frame and suppleness for the trot tour, lovely balance with huge crossing for the half passes. Bit of tensions for passage, and for the first piaffe it becomes slightly with a couple of steps with backwards tendency, 2nd piaffe is better. Still lacking some more natural active rhythm for the piaffe itself. Nice walk tour, good rhythm and nice over the back with good over track. Well balanced zig-zag canter, good series - could be a bit more free uphill but nice big changes. Nice sit for pirouettes, lack a bit more clear canter. Final centerline with good passage / piaffe / passage.

American Adrienne Lyle was showing her just 10 yr old Salvino by Sandro Hit / Donnerhall. Super light and easy overall picture. Lovely off the ground with super suspension for passage and nice active picture for piaffe and sharp transitions with nice flow. Small tensions for passage but very obedient and playing along all the way with super nice qualities. Good walk. 2nd piaffe / passage tour really nice with power and flow. Transition to canter becomes a bit late. Zig-zag canter becomes a bit unbalanced. Nice series and good pirouettes. Small tensions for the final passage at the centerline.

Verdades, Dante Weltino and Lonoir stands out from today´s CDIO Grand Prix at Rotterdam

USA, The Netherlands and Sweden was the final team top 3 after today´s Grand Prix in Rotterdam.

The weather became a bit of a challange during the test today, as a thunder storm was heading towards Rotterdam, and for German Anabel Balkenhol with Dablino the heavy wind affected their test in the way that the fence around the arena just tipped over short after they started their test. Therefore judge at C, Danish H.C. Matthiesen jumped out and stoppede Anabel, so that the fence could be replaced and she could start over her test again.

Later on after the press conference the entire press center were evacuated due to the weather situation and electricity also went out.

Outstanding performance from Verdades and Graves

Outstanding with a super nice and expressive performance from Verdades and Laura Graves today. Light and easy all the way eventhough you might want to have a slightly different picture of the piaffe in the way that the picture could be a bit more closed and bit more relaxed, but easy transitions and clear rhythm all the way. Nice frame and light contact and for Verdades the weather did not seem to affect him at all. Judging panel totally agreed with Verdades and Graves in top of today´s Grand Prix.

Dante Weltino and Nilshagen showing their qualities again today

Dante Weltino and Swedish Therese Nilshagen did ones again show their strength. Lovely easy picture for the trot tour, good walk and lots of potential and good qualities for the canter work, which still lacking a bit more clear uphill tendency all the way, but what an ability this stallion has for doing the most difficult exercises with top strength and balance. The suppleness and easy light picture is the way we love dressage ano 2017.

Danish Warmblood showing super qualities

Lonoir and American Olivia Lagoy-Weltz are not just interesting with Danish Warmblood eyes but also from their lovely performance today. Lonoir is a 13 yr old gelding by De Noir / Loran (Rassing´s Lonoir - bred by Jan and Dorte Rassing).

Easy light and strong performance in very nice harmony between horse and rider. A new and very exciting international combination without any exercise weaknesses and lots of highlights.

Common for all 3 combinations - light easy and effortless performances.

Legolas not fit

Today Legolas was at start with Dawn White-O´Connor (long time assistent trainer for Steffen Peters). Dawn took over Legolas the ride back in January 2017 from Peters. It was their first apperance at the European scene. And from the first extended trot the rhythm was not clearly balanced (as often seen before under Steffen Peters), and when Dawn is going at the diagonal towards the first passage, judge (and veterinarian) at C, Danish H.C. Matthiesen rings the bell = elimination from the competition.

In many ways very sad for Dawn, but (finally) the correct decision both seen from judge at C and seen from the "side line".

Hannoveraner riding horses and foals for the auction July 14 and 15

3 riding horses and 3 foals caught most attention from H2R when checking out the entire video collection for the upcoming HANN auction i Verden, and then also a foal by jumping stallion Van Gogh which might be the next Cosmo?

The gelding with catalog no 8 by Rienzi shows nice suppleness in all 3 gaits with a nice uphill natural frame.

Catalog no 163 by Totilas / Desperados (without video) is full sister to KWPN approved stallion Glock´s Toto Jr.

Destiny OLD winner of Nürnberger Burg-Pokal qualifier but no 2 Soiree d´Amour gets the ticket for the final

A very unusual way to get the ticket for the Nürnberger Burg-Pokal final

With the new combination Destiny OLD and Kristina Bröring-Sprehe at start for yesterday´s "preliminary" Prix Sct. Georg Special it looked like a kind of "easy ticket" for the final. But when a horse previously has been at start for the finals, the horse is not allowed to compete again. So therefore today ticket for the final went to Kira Wulferding with the beautiful mare Soiree d´Amour, eventhough they came 2nd scoring 76,610%.

Today Kristina and Destiny showed even more sharpness than yesterday. Impressive education and work from the former rider and owner Sandra Nuxoll. The new combination has just been together for about 3 month now. Kristina can in many ways show the Desperado son in the same way as the father. "Attacking" successfully from start to final. Destiny is showing great basic qualities in all three gaits, and Kristina is able to get optium benefit from every single exercise today.
