FEI Press Release - Sweden’s Kittel wins leg five at Olympia, but Britain’s Faurie pushes him all the way to take second place

Skærmbillede 2017-12-14 kl. 09.08.38.png

Kittel jumps to strong lead on Western European League table and looks well on his way to Paris Final; Netherlands Gal has to settle for third

They say it’s never over until the fat lady sings, and at tonight’s FEI World Cup™ Dressage 2017/2018 Western European League qualifier at Olympia in London (GBR), when it seemed Sweden’s Patrick Kittel (41) already had it in the bag, along came the home side’s Emile Faurie (54) with a last-to-go ride that almost overtook the league leader.

Scoring 80.405, the British rider took even himself by surprise when slotting into runner-up spot just 0.155 percentage points behind the super Swede who is now well on his way to the Final in Paris (FRA) next April. Kittel has had a great run, and with 75 points on the board is sitting pretty. But after tonight’s electrifying victory gallop during which he “high-fived” loads of spectators on his tour of the iconic Grand Hall, he said,

"“I take my hat off to the showjumpers, I don’t know how they do it - I’ve done three shows in a row and now it’s 'give me a glass of champagne and get me to bed', because I’m totally exhausted!"

Patrik Kittel SWE

This win means even more to him because his only other visit to the London venue was a disaster. “The last time I was here was 13 years ago and I finished last. I went home in the lorry feeling really bad but my wife, Lyndal, said you have to go back, Olympia is an amazing show and you can’t leave it another 13 years!”

British riders were holding the top three places after Richard Davison opened the second-half of tonight’s action, but, fourth-last to go, it was Edward Gal’s (47) score of 79.340 that Kittel was chasing when second-last into the ring. The Dutchman’s big moving stallion, Glock’s Zonik who topped yesterday’s Grand Prix, produced some breathtaking extensions and mesmerising trot-work, but the nine-year-old lost balance at times, and mistakes including a break in the one-tempi changes left them looking vulnerable. In total contrast Kittel and Delauney, the 11-year-old gelding with which he claimed individual 11th at this summer’s Longines FEI European Championships on home ground in Gothenburg, produced a flawless performance. Kittel insisted he didn’t expect to win, “but my horse is such a trier”, the Swedish star said.

Faurie however threw down a powerful challenge with a sensational test from the fabulously handsome stallion Delatio and has, tonight, set British Dressage fans’ hearts fluttering with excitement all over again. The expression of near-disbelief on the face of the three-time Olympian and European team gold medallist when his score was announced said it all. “I’m in shock at the percentage score, not the performance, he was so great in the ring and I’m in love with this horse!” he said. “I was hoping to go one better than yesterday (when they finished fourth). I don’t know him that well yet because I’m only riding him a few months and I just wanted to do him justice”, he added.

“I had too many mistakes tonight, but I’m pleased with Zonic” Gal said. Like all the other riders he heaped praise on the London fixture. “You don’t have an atmosphere like this anywhere else” he pointed out. “There was one woman screaming so loud I was wondering what’s happening here, do we need to call an ambulance or something?!”

Kittel meanwhile is already planning ahead. “I’ll take my other horse, Deja, to Amsterdam because he’s the one I want to ride at the Final” he explained. The Dutch city will host the next leg of the series when the action resumes at the end of January.

27 Danish Warmblood colts selected for main licensing in Herning, March 2018

DV logo.jpg

62 colts were ready for yesterday´s pre-selection at Vilhelmborg in Aarhus.

It was a cold and rainy day, but still with breeders and dressage entusiasts sitting in the arena with hot coffee watching and chatting about every single step of the maybe new stallions.

The day started with presentation free in the arena where you really saw a lot of promissing stallions, from there the Danish Warmblood licensing comittee were selection 30 colts for hard surface, subsequently shown by lunging and ending up with a total of 27 for the main licensing.

From watching the entire day, there are no doubt that the lunging makes the difference. Powerful supple movers from the presentation free, showed for a big part far from the same qualities for the lunging.

Huge positive imprint from Grand Galaxy Win

8 colts by Grand Galaxy Win selected for the main licensing. Galaxy seems to add a lovely type, long legs, supple movements, but to the down side some might lack a bit of strength for the topline. Will be very interesting to see the devolopment from now to the licensing.

You can find much more videos from presentation free at H2R Facebook page.

3 top favorites from H2R point of view:

Birkedals Aston by Bøgegårdens Alphabeat/Landtinus - super supple mover of the ground with lovely expression and superb balance. This colt is already co-owned by family Würtz Green, as a future prospect for their son, junior rider Kristian Würtz Green.

Forever by Fürst Romancier / Desperados - lovely modern type, and still with young horse look. Supple mover through the body.

Mr. Grey by Grey Flanell / Dalwhinnie, nice frame with power and suppleness of the ground and super modern look.

FEI PRESS RELEASE - Schneider and Sammy scoop the honours in Salzburg

Skærmbillede 2017-12-10 kl. 21.18.41.png

It’s a German one-two as von Bredow-Werndl fills second spot; Denmark’s Bachmann-Andersen is an impressive third

It takes two to tango as every top-class Dressage rider knows, and Dorothee Schneider (48) and her lovely 11-year-old gelding Sammy Davis Jr. nailed it with the harmony they showed in their tango-themed test that won today’s fourth leg of the FEI World Cup™ Dressage 2017/2018 Western European League at Salzburg in Austria.

"Sammy wants to present himself and he loves to dance, so he’s the perfect Freestyle horse! He’s good-looking with a character to match, and today was our best score so far - it’s exciting because we are coming together as a pair more and more!"

Dorothee Schneider (GER)

In a start-list of 12 combinations from seven countries, Frenchman Ludovic Henry took the lead when posting 75.673 percent with After You when seventh to go, but Schneider and Sammy blew the class wide open when next in, putting 83.415 on the board. “I could feel in the warm-up that he was in really good shape - he’s been doing an amazing job over the last month!” Schneider said of the horse who helped her claim individual 11th spot at this summer’s Longines FEI European Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden.

It was never going to be easy to better that, and although the popular duo of Agnete Kirk Thinggaard and Jojo Az were in sparkling form they didn’t threaten when following with a score of 76.405. Their Danish counterparts, Daniel Bachmann-Andersen and Blue Hors Zack came a lot closer however, the talented 27-year-old rider and the 13-year-old KWPN stallion oozing promise of even better to come as they strutted their way to a mark of 80.375.

That moved them into runner-up spot, but they would have to settle for third when the penultimate partnership of Germany’s Jessica von Bredow-Werndl (31) and Unee BB stormed in to post 81.565. This pair have a wonderful record in the FEI World Cup™ Dressage series, and have twice finished third at the Finals, in Lyon (FRA) in 2014 and Las Vegas (USA) in 2015. At 16 years of age Unee is still flying, and von Bredow-Werndl is very much hoping to make the cut with him to the 2018 Final in Paris, France next April. Each national federation can only send a maximum of three riders however and with defending champion, Germany’s Isabell Werth, guaranteed a place once she completes the qualification criteria of two qualifying scores with her chosen horse, the competition between the Germans themselves is intense.

“I’m really fighting for our place at the Final. Even though Unee turns 17 next year he’s still in top form, so I want us to be there!”, von Bredow-Werndl said today.

Schneider also has Paris in her sights with Sammy Davis Jr. who only stepped up to Grand Prix level in March of this year and who is clearly coming along in leaps and bounds. However although she has moved to the top of the leaderboard after today’s win, she’s not taking qualification for granted. She knows von Bredow-Werndl and Fabienne Lutkemeier are snapping at her heels and that it’s far from done and dusted yet. “Sammy is going to have a rest over Christmas and then maybe we will go to Neumunster (GER) because I want to get Paris too, but it’s not going to be easy!”, she said.

The Western European League now moves on to Olympia in London (GBR) this week where the Grand Prix will take place on Tuesday 12 December and the FEI World Cup™ Dressage Freestyle will be held on Wednesday evening, 13 December.

Result:

1. Sammy Davis Jr. (Dorothee Schneider) GER 83.415

2. Unee BB (Jessica von Bredow-Werndl) GER 81.565

3. Blue Hors Zack (Daniel Bachmann-Andersen) DEN 80.375

World Cup leg in Salzburg for Dorothee Schneider and Sammy Davis Jr.

Skærmbillede 2017-12-10 kl. 13.00.12.png

Making their international debut at CDI3 in Herning this year in March, and now winning their first World Cup qualifier is quite an achivement for experienced Dorothee Schneider with the 11-yr old gelding Sammy Davis Jr. This weekend with personal best in both Grand Prix and today´s freestyle tells all about their form and progress.

Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Unee BB were showing their technical very strong test in a good way. Like yesterday Unee did not really look as if he was top motivated, but still doing his job with good qualities.

New at the World Cup podium today was Danish Daniel Bachmann Andersen with Blue Hors Zack. They are getting more and more experience together in the arena, and at the same time Zack is getting stronger. Also a personal best weekend for Daniel and Zack in both Grand Prix and Grand Prix freestyle. Showing this form at the end of the year is hopefully a very good sign for the next season, as the Danish team for next years WEG in Tryon will presumably be without Anna Kasprzak as she is expecting her first child in the spring. But for sure more "new" Danish combinations will be ready for the next season.

Fabienne Lütkemeier and Fabregaz were also showing top form today with a technical solid test, Highlights were passage and piaffe tours and nice canter pirouettes. As Fabregas is still very young at this level and today with his just 2nd World Cup freestyle ever, the degree of difficulty is still not that high.

Strong error free test from today´s no 5 Danish Agnete Kirk Thinggaard and Jojo AZ. When it all comes together like today, you can just lean back and enjoy this freestyle.

International CDI5 Grand Prix Special debut victory for Tørveslettens Quattro and Anna Blomgren Rogers (video)

Very controlled and top expressive Grand Prix Special today from 9 yr old Danish Warmblood mare Tørveslettens Quattro with Swedish rider Anna Blomgren Rogers.

This grey mare is just showing everyone how to dance, and at the same time Anna is able to control the power with just a minimum of tensions. Just enjoy their winning test here below.

Super World Cup Grand Prix victory for Germany´s Dorothee Schneider with Sammy Davis Jr (video of the entire class)

Skærmbillede 2017-12-09 kl. 10.19.43.png

Super sharp and motivated combination Dorothee Schneider and Sammy Davis Jr for today´s World Cup Grand Prix in Salzburg. This year Dorothee seems to bring her success from last year with Showtime where she won both the Grand Prix and the freestyle. She looks like a very strong card for tomorrows victory again.

Today Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Unee BB were doing a solid test, but seen from the sideline Unee was a bit in the stallion mode today, where Jessica really had to ask for every single exercise.

Placed 4th today was Fabienne Lütkemeier with her next top horse Fabregaz. It is clear that Fabregaz still lacking some more experience, but at the same time Fabienne is a master in showing the highlights with lovely qualities.

The Danes

Placed at the "podium" was Danish Daniel Bachmann Andersen with the 13 year old KWPN stallion Blue Hors Zack. This combination has really step into the international scene lately, as they have gained both experience and as wll Zack is getting stronger and more confident doing the piaffe and passage tours. Just one single issue during the 15 one times today.

Agnete Kirk Thinggaard and her long time partner finishes as no 5 today. Showing a very nice test with good expression and power, but unfortunately error for both the two times and the one times kept them away from a higher placement today.

H2R comments about top 5 from today´s class:

Sammy Davis jr GER - nice halt bit tense out, nice extended trot at diagonal, active supple half passes, good halt for rein back, bit tense rein back, active expressive 1st piaffe/passage with nice smooth transitions, bit tense extended walk, good collected walk, nice transition to passage, super nice 2nd piaffe/passage, good transition to canter, nice 2 times, tense bit unbalanced small error zig-zag, good 1 times, 1st pirouette bit hind aides bit spin, 2nd pirouette becomes bit too big, very nice active final centerline.

Blue Hors Zack DEN - good halt and forward, expressive extended trot, good balance activity for half passes, not square halt for rein back, good rein back, need to be bit more sharp into 1st passage, bit early 1st piaffe with good activity and nice transition to passage, good walk, transition to passage lack clear flow, good 2nd piaffe stays nicely on the spot could show bit more activity, super 2 times covering lots of ground, good extended trot, bit unbalanced zig-zag, some tensions for 1 times, good quality of pirouettes but lack bit more control becomes bit hurried, good passage, final pi becomes bit forward.

Impressive arena for CDI5 dressage in Geneva

Isabell Werth and Don Johnson took another "easy" victory today in Geneva, while Bernadette Brune showed her Spirit of the Age in the best form ever. Easy obedient test with very nice qualities and today´s result was also personal best for the combination.

A small error in the beginning of the test for Patrik Kittel and the light footed Well done de la Roche breaking into canter at the mid of the first extended trot. The rest of the test was well balance, a bit concervative and for a few moments bit behind the verticle. Lovely light over all expression.

Today´s no 5 was Swedish Anna Blomgren Rogers with the lovely power mare Tørveslettens Quattro. They were showing an expressive test with lovely piaffe/passage transitions clear rhythm with lots of suspension, and not least without any technical issues. A super debut at CDI5 level and they are still very green at international level, but for sure an attractive combination for the new season. Anna and Quattro made their international debut earlier this year when training for Anne van Olst, but has recently started training for Patrik Kittel, as Anna and her husband Will Rogers has moved to Germany.

Via this link you can find every single combination from today´s Grand Prix.

Press Release - Isabell Werth first champion of Saab Top 10 Dressage

The very first champion of Saab Top 10 Dressage has been crowned. It is Isabell Werth (GER) with Emilio 107 on 86,875%. Runner up is Sweden’s Patrik Kittel and his mare Deja on 83,000% and in third place Helen Langehanenberg (GER) and Damsey FRH on 82,665%.

Helen Langehanenberg is riding 15-year-old Damsey FRH, a horse she has only had since 2016. The horse has, despite his age, developed a lot the past year and during the program he is light in his movements, calm, secure and safe. Langehanenberg pulls off a really nice show with a refreshing test for the audience. With a personal best of 82,665% she really sets the pressure of the three riders left in the final.

- I am super happy with my test, Damsey was so fresh but relaxed today, when we entered the arena he just wanted to do this, says Helen Langehanenberg and continues:

- I don’t know what I could have done better. I’m ending up third today, I hadn’t really expect that. I love doing the freestyle and the horse was just perfect! I’m going home very happy after today's show and will go to sleep with a smile tonight!

Isabell Werth, with 11-year-old Emilio 107, went into the arena directly after Helen’s super test. Isabell and Emilio gave the audience and judges a very relaxed impression – well balanced in the extensions and easy back in collections. Emilio is still a young horse but has the advantage of having a champion in the saddle. With a fantastic show they also pulls off a personal best together with 86,875%.

- I am really proud and it’s an honor to be the very first champion of Saab Top 10 Dressage. We, as riders, are so happy that we in Saab found a sponsor that supports us in this final, the whole package is perfect!

- The way Emilio did it today was perfect, it's not easy to warm up here, there is a lot to see and hear. I'm very happy with this weekend. It’s something special with this audience here in Stockholm, they have the exact feeling of when they can clap or not and this gave us just a super finish, says Isabell Werth.

She continues:

- There are many challenges in our program between collection and extension, for example from extended canter back to pirouette.

Patrik Kittel and Deja, a 13-year-old Swedish warmblood, was just on fire today! Deja was super easy and light, well in balance and there was so much harmony between the two during the test. The two finished at 83,000%, also a personal best for this equipage.

- Deja is a very soft horse with a heart of gold. For me today it was so much power in everything, from audience, to judges, horses and riders, says Patrik Kittel.

- Deja did some really good piaffes in the ring today; the test was just flowing for us.

-The coolest thing for me was that when you work with something for a very long time and it comes out like this, like all I have been hoping for... It is really a very good day at the office! says Kittel.

During the competition a world record was set in spectator judging. Over 900 people in the audience used the app where you can do your own judging of the riders.

- The audience here at Sweden International Horse Show is really interested in the sport and has a high knowledge. It is quite close between the spectator’s scores and the judges'. I think that is a good way to interact with the people in the arena and is something we have to work more with in the future, says Kittel.

Prize money distributed, Grand Prix Freestyle: 148 000 €

Breakdown: 45 000, 30 000, 20 000, 15 000, 10 000, 8 000, 5 000, 5 000, 5 000, 5 000

Best in show dressage: Isabell Werth (GER) wins a Volkswagen Tiguan.

A great final for Saab Top 10 dressage today in Stockholm - the "queen" took it all

Skærmbillede 2017-12-03 kl. 12.40.46.png

No one could beat the "Queen" today

Even with the best wibes for Danish super combination Cathrine Dufour and Atterupgaards Cassidy the task was just not possible today.

Think the judging became a little harsh to Danish Anna Zibrandtsen and Arlando, as they delivered a clearly much more relaxed and expressive test today than for the Grand Prix and the same fact for Spain´s Severo Jurado Lopez with Deep Impact - both were clearly seen in front of Mister X. And at the same time the local Tinne Vilhelmson Silfvén was not seen up for a finishing spot as no 5!

Werth went in and did what she is a pure master at - WINNING

From yesterdays performance one might get the feeling of not 120% on form, but still with a win, and then going into a new day with a new competition just doing her stuff - this is just something extraordinary.

H2R comments on every ride today:

No 1 - Emilio GER - Werth just have the “killer look 👀 “ top focused and balanced test. Mrs Werth does never give any victory away 👑👑👑 big smile for final piaffe pirouette and applauding audience. She will be hard to beat 86,875%

No 2 - Deja SWE - nice start good 1st piaffe, smooth supple expressive trot tour and “isn’t she lovely” just underlines this freestyle. Piaffe tours clearly suits Deja much better today, becomes bit low in the frame for two times, good pirouettes, nice one times, wow transition direct in music at letter back into trot. Strong final passage lines. 83,00%
