The Longines FEI/WBFSH World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses 2018 certainly didn’t disappoint as 22,000 visitors from all across the globe enjoyed five days of spectacular sport. This was the third time for the event to take place in Ermelo (NED), and a total of 180 horses from 19 studbooks lined out in the three age categories. The Westphalian stallion, Revolution, claimed the Five-Year-Old title, the Hannoverian, d’Avie, topped the Six-Year-Olds and the KWPN, Glamourdale, clinched pole position in the Seven-Year-Old division. And as the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Aat Both, pointed out, “the overall quality was formidable!”
Five-Year-Olds
Winner of the first qualifying competition, Revolution (Rocky Lee x Rouletto) earned a massive 9.62 points and posted two perfect-10 scores in yesterday’s Final. Ground Jury member Maria Colliander described him as “a rockstar, a powerhouse” after he pinned the Hannoverian stallion, Destacado (Desperados x Londonderry) ridden by Germany’s Matthias Alexander Rath, into runner-up spot and and the Oldenburg mare, Candy OLD (Sir Donnerhall x Furst Heinrich) with Rath’s compatriot Eva Moller on board into third.
Revolution’s Danish rider, Andreas Helgstrand (41), was very proud of his rising star.
Seven-Year-Olds
The medals for the oldest category of horses were next to be decided, and the four that were heading the leaderboard going into this morning’s finale remained at the top, but not in the same order. Glamourdale (Lord Leatherdale x Negro) was in third as the day began and the powerful black stallion proved to be the show-stealer, also picking up a 10 for his fantastic canter.
Posting a mark of 87.050 for British rider Charlotte Fry (22) he was almost three percentage points clear of the KWPN stallion Governor-Str and Dutch rider Adelinde Cornelissen who were taking their second silver medal in 12 months, while Norway’s isabel Freese steered the Hannoverian, Fuersten-Look (Furstenball x Londonderry), into bronze. The latter were the leading pair as the day began, but a mistake in the last line of their test cost them dearly.
Six-Year-Olds
Last but not least to take their places on the podium were the six-year-old contingent and it was a special moment for Spanish rider Severo Jurado Lopez when he collected his fourth gold medal and his third in succession at Ermelo. That meant he also claimed his third Longines watch today.
His Hannoverian chestnut d’Avie (Don Juan de Hus x Londonderry) collected 9.26 points to finish just ahead of Germany’s Laura Strobel with the Rheinlander Villeneuve (Vitalis x Dancier), while bronze went to Dutch rider Dinja van Liere with the KWPN Hermes (Easy Game x Flemmingh) who scored 8.78. “D’Avie is a superb horse with a bright future ahead!” said judge Isobel Wessels.

Another super win for Severo in 6 year old finals at World Championships for Young Horses
Even though is was not a fully polished test today, with two small issues for the flying changes, it was a convincing performance with a motivated and very well trained horse - a worthy World Champion, and the 2nd stallion from Helgstrand Dressage this year with a gold medal.
And this was the 5th World Champion medal for Severo, and his 4th of gold! (bronze medal last year with Quel Filou and 3 x 🥇with Danish Warmblood mare Fiontini).
H2R comments during the test:
What a lovely picture for the trot tour, superb half pass left, super balance shoulder in, bend in the body half pass right, good transition to walk, maximum outcome extended walk, superb collected walk, superb pirouettes, small tension transition to canter, bit small 1st change, 2nd more relaxed with super nice quality, error front 3rd change, coming superb back for medium canter, 4th change super, lack bit more flow for transition to trot, super diagonal.
From H2R point of view Villeneuve came much too close to d´Avie, as Villeneuve clearly was lacking more power and expression today.
3rd position and bronze medal with a convincing start of the class. Well presented and with good quality all the way.
Placed 5th Danish Warmblood stallion Hesselhøj Donkey Boy
H2R comments during the test:
Small tension for entering halt, super medium trot, good shoulder in, turn and good half passes, superb active walk, small issue transition to canter, bit high tempo for the canter tour, superb changes, super extended trot.

7 year old final
A pleasure to watch the new World Champion from entering halt to final halt. So much control and still let go, in an easy and obedient way. Super frame and expression. Even though the walk is not a highlight Charlotte gets top outcome, and when said that it is a very useable walk especially when thinking towards Grand Prix.
H2R comment during the test:
Super expression for the trot tour, nice stretching, lot of balance, easy going very into to aides, smooth all the way, super transitions, bit short walk but clear rhythm, good collected walk and nice pirouettes, WOW diagonal canter, sit and activity for pirouette, super changes, super series. WHAT a super horse and rider.
Interview with the new World Champion for 7 year old horses, 22 year old British Charlotte Fry:
Winning test:
2nd position - Governor Str / Adelinde Cornelissen
H2R comments during the test:
Very smooth balanced trot work, very nice steady contact in an uphill frame all the time, super nice walk tour with nice walk pirouettes with good balance and clear beat, nice balance/control/sit for pirouettes, super flow series. Super test!
3rd position - Fürsten-Look / Isabel Freese
H2R comments during the test:
Bit open halt, super 1st diagonal, smooth turns, half passes, lovely stretching, small unbalance 2nd half pass, super extended walk, bit big collected walk, super beat, small unbalance out of 2nd walk pirouette, lovely half passes, what a sit for pirouette and the expression for the pirouette in itself, super 4 times, error 3 times. Super test.
4th best today and best 7 year old mare in the World
It is a superb result, but for Danish Carina Cassøe Krüth this is now her final position with the outstanding Danish Warmblood mare Heiline´s Danciera for the 2nd year, as she also came 4th as a 5 year old, and last year also 4th with her 2nd horse Red Diamant.
Enjoy their test here below:
Incognito – Diamond Hit colt was sold for top price at 41.000 euros to Italy.
2nd most expressive colt was sold for 28.000 euros by Ebony / Blue Hors Zatchmo to the Netherlands.

Strongest ever 5 year old final at World Championship for Young Horses
When watching the entire final starting with the points at a very high level just might get the feeling that this was kind of over heating. But the field for this years final was actually at a level that we've never seen before.
It was very much about the "day" for each horse, as it was a really high quality field. The differences became the about the margins.
I was very interesting to see that it was not just the big stallions or the light-footed mares scoring, but common for the top was three top gaits, high ride ability and not least potential as future top horses.
It was of course both a relief and a huge achievement for Andreas Helgstrand winning his 3rd gold medal at World Championships for Young Horses. At the beginning of the finals he was at start with Zhaplin Langholt, and was eliminated due to a bit of blod in the mouth caused by a tiny slit in the lip, so coming in as last to go with Revolution knowing that he had to do his and absolute best to be crowned as the Champion just made an extra positive pressure for performing at his best together with Revolution. And they did not let each other down, result was clear from the judges.
The two expressive top mares Straight Horse Ascenzione and Atterupgaards Delorean did also impress the judging team with their lightless, expression and qualities. Victoria and Ascenzione showed a strong final while some tension crept in for Selina and Delorean today, but still with a special comment from co-commentator at Clipmyhorse, German top Young Horse judge Christoph Hess "world class horse".

Valparaiso, Brianna and Nexolia Feodoro ready for 7 year old final tomorrow
Yet another final spot for Danish based Australian rider Simone Pearce, this time with the 7 year old Nexolia Feodoro, as she also competed successfully at last years World Championship.
Unfortunately for Swedish Jacob Nørby Sørensen (representing DEN/Danish Warmblood) with Ellegaardens San Droneur they finished as 5th today.
For the other two Danish combinations Carina Cassøe Krüth with Red Diamant and Michael Søgaard with Jukebox the way over the small final did not really work out the way they have hoped for, as they were ending up as no 12 and no 20 today.

Listen to the judges comments for today's top 3 combinations:

A very long day with a lot of very nice combinations
40 combinations ready for the 6 year old test started this afternoon, and just 12 of them direct through to the final Sunday.
You might not agree with all individual scoring, but followed the entire test it is for sure the 12 correct combinations direct for the final.
Today's winner Villeneuve with Laura Stobel was not a wow test, but throughout a quality test.
2nd today Adelinde Cornelissen with Henkie showed a very nice test with good expression, the only thing which might be an issue for the final is the contact and the not very satisfied mouth from Henkie.
Severo and D´avie showed a strong test. D´avie is presented in a super frame alle the way, the only thing today was that the walk tour could have been show with a bit more suppleness and forward search. When Severo can manage this for final the podium is also secured.
Both German girls Stefanie Wolf and Dorothee Schneider are showing strong tests, but with advantage for Stefanie as her Matchball OLD is showing more expression all the way compared to Dorothees two mares.
Today's best flying changes were executed by Diederik van Silfhout with Habana, which also was reflected by the best score for submission 9,0 today.
Both Danes a last year at the podium, Jan Møller Christensen with Hesselhøj Donkey Boy and Andreas Helgstrand with Ferrari OLD show strong tests, and for both of them they still have more to show for the final.
Danish combinations for the small final tomorrow
Severo and Atterupgaards Botticelli are ready for the small final, like Stenagers Wyatt Earp and Kenneth Damgaard and Hevringholms Delaya with Susanne Barnow.
Botticelli, Total Hope and Hot Chokolade are H2R combinations for the final.
See the entire result here.
A pleasure to watch the power from the big stallion controlled with a strong seat and light aides from Charlotte Fry.
They came in 3rd in today's 7 year old qualifier scoring:
Trot 9,8 walk 7,5 canter 10 submission 9,6 perspective 10

The best young horses are for sure in Ermelo
From today's 7 year old qualifier it became a tribute to Fürstenball himself as a top producer of both winner and 2nd placed.
Both horses very well educated happy athletes, with both mindset and abilities for the job, and this definitely also includes today's no 3 Glamourdale with Van Olst Horses rider Charlotte Fry in the saddle.
Which one from today's top 3 will be the new World Champion is all about the current shape when entering the arena Sunday morning.
4th was Adelinde Cornelissen with the very obedient Governor str. and 5th was again a Van Olst Horses rider Franka Loos with Equilence´s Giovanni.
Heiline´s Danciera and Carina Cassøe Krüth - photo credit: Lily Forado
The small margin for today's victory went to Fürsten-Look and Freese, as from H2R point of view the most polished test was from Danciera and Cassøe Krüth.
H2R comments during the tests:
Fürsten-Look: Smooth supple trot tour, lovely half passes, bit big collected walk, big supple extended walk, small tension hind for 2nd half pass, nice sit/balance for 1st pirouette, error 2nd change for 4 times, lovely smooth frontlegs for pirouettes, just gives a great picture. Lovely test.
Heiline´s Danciera: Super halt, lovely swing and balance for the trot tour, supple, very nice relaxation for the walk, nice carriage for half passes, very nice control/balance for pirouette, nice half pass straight change at centerline, good serie, lovely sit/carriage for 2nd pirouette, superb test!
Other Danish combinations must go via the small final
Jacob Nørby Sørensen with Ellegaardens San Droner showed a technical clear test with smaller issues for the straightness of the changes.
Carina Cassøe Krüth was also at start with Red Diamant, and in general the judgement seemed a bit harsh, but the main point might have been the lack of clear contact collecting from the medium canter where Red Diamant becomes somewhat over the bit for a few step.
Michael Søgaard with Jukebox showed a technical clear test, but lacking bit more expression for the test in general.
Again Simone Pearce was very near going direct to the final, this time with Nexolia Feodoro, and they look like serious contenders for one of tomorrow's 3 spots for the final.
Both Flora and Goodman looks like candidates for the finals.
