FEI press release - Graves gives USA silver; Dujardin underpins comeback by bringing bronze home for Britain

Screen Shot 2018-09-15 at 10.10.25.png
Screen Shot 2018-09-15 at 10.10.29.png

Germany’s Isabell Werth (49) showed exactly why she is the most decorated rider in the history of equestrian sport when claiming the Helgstrand Dressage Grand Prix Special title at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2018 in Tryon, USA today. Bringing the 14-year-old mare, Bella Rose, back to good health and fitness after an injury sustained four years ago has been a long, slow process. But her faith and dedication was repaid in full this afternoon when she topped the Special podium for the third time in the 28-year history of the Games.

And she was under maximum pressure when last into the US Trust arena, with America’s Laura Graves (31) and Verdades sitting in gold medal spot ahead of Great Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin (33) and Mount St John Freestyle as she set off down the centre line. She had an added incentive to nudge them further down the podium however, because her great personal friend and patron, Madeleine Winter-Schulze, broke her leg in a fall shortly after watching Werth help win team gold yesterday evening.

“I feel so sorry for Madeleine, she is in hospital so I said I’ll try my best to bring the gold medal to her this evening with a glass of champagne!"

Isabell Werth (GER)

said the lady whose golden collection is second to none.

Graves set the target with an extraordinary performance from her 16-year-old gelding when fourth-last to go of the 30 starters. With clockwork rhythm and show-stopping style they posted a mark of 81.717 that would prove hard to beat. Werth’s team-mate Sonke Rothenberger (23), who came so close to toppling his legendary compatriot when taking individual silver at last summer’s FEI European Championships in Gothenburg (SWE), looked likely to put up a mighty challenge when next into the arena, but a couple of mistakes saw him having to settle for a score of 81.277.

And then Dujardin overtook him when posting 81.489 to slot temporarily into silver medal spot. The British rider was the undisputed queen of the sport during her record-breaking partnership with the great Valegro which came to an end when the horse was retired two years ago. So she’s been in the wilderness for a while, but today she stepped right back onto centre stage when scoring 81.489 with a mare that is only nine years old. It’s clear this is a horse whose potential is only beginning to be realised, so there’s a shiver of excitement running through the sport after today’s result.

Dujardin knew she had to up her game to prove that potential, and she did it with a breathtaking performance that suggests there’s so much more to look forward to. “I felt I’d nothing to lose today and I knew I had a tough job. I was like the jam between the German sandwich, with Isabell at one end and Sonke at the other!” she said.

However it was all about Isabell at the end of the day, the living legend punching out massive scores to put the result beyond doubt for a final scoreline of 86.246.

“I knew we had to give the best to get the gold today, but I felt so safe on her, and she had so much energy and was so patient. It’s always great to go in when you know there’s a chance because the horse is so good. Then it’s just up to you to show it in the right way” Werth said.

Now it’s on to Sunday’s Grand Prix Freestyle when Werth may find it even more difficult to secure her third gold medal of the tournament. Because Graves and Dujardin are in no mood to crumble. And it looks very much like Dujardin wants to wrest back the crown she wore for so long during Valegro’s reign as Dressage king of the ring.

That may not be in two days’ time, but talking about her mare the British rider said  “when she’s stronger and more confident I’m going to give Isabell a run for her money - we’ll be back fighting!”. Werth just smiled.

FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018: Formidable Germans take Helgestrand Dressage Team title

Screen Shot 2018-09-14 at 12.56.39.png
Screen Shot 2018-09-14 at 12.56.42.png

Hosts scoop silver while British bag the bronze

Brilliant performances from Sonke Rothenberger (23) and Isabell Werth (49) secured the Helgestrand Dressage Team title for Germany at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2018 in Tryon, USA today. The defending champions threw down the gauntlet when Jessica von Bredow-Werndl’s (32) leading score with TSF Dalera BB was backed up by another great result from Dorothee Schneider (49) and Sammy Davis Jr. yesterday. And this evening their national anthem rang out across the US Trust Arena when their compatriots wrapped it up to secure their 12th victory in the 52-year history of the world Dressage championships, and their seventh in the eight editions of FEI World Equestrian Games™.

It was a gritty battle for silver and bronze, with only a whisper separating the British, Americans and Swedes going into the closing stages. And it was the Swedes who lost out on a podium placing when Laura Graves’ last-to-go effort saw the host nation pin them back to fourth by an agonising 0.15 points.

Werth has won more medals than any other athlete in equestrian sport, but today’s success with her beloved 14-year-old mare Bella Rose, who was already rising to the very top before suffering an injury in 2014 that put her out of action for more than three years, was something very special to her. She burst into tears after posting 84.829 to put the result beyond doubt with the biggest score of the competition.

“Most people know that my heart is so close to this horse. She is a gift, I saw that when I first met her as a three-year-old and she has never lost it. Her lightness, her elegance, she never wants to make a mistake, she’s full of power and energy, it is the greatest pleasure to work with her!"

Isabell Werth (GER)

said the six-time Olympic gold medallist who was also on winning teams at the FEI World Equestrian Games at The Hague (NED) in 1994, Rome (ITA) in 1998, Aachen (GER) in 2006 and Caen (FRA) in 2014.

Rothenberger, whose father, Sven, was also in that victorious German side in 1990, was delighted with his score of 81.444 with Cosmo. “He gave me so much in the last extended trot, I don’t think there are too many horses that give so much and it felt really easy for me and that’s what dressage is about” he said.

Once Werth had settled the destiny of gold it was a nervous wait for the British whose total score of 229.628 was already settled. The final riders from Sweden and USA could push them out of a medal placing, and Sweden’s Patrik Kittel came very close to doing just that when putting 78.199 on the board, but it wasn’t quite enough. And when Graves and Verdades produced the second-best mark of the day, 81.537, the British had to settle for bronze. But Carl Hester (Hawtins Delicato), Charlotte Dujardin (Mount St John Freestyle), Emile Faurie (Dono di Maggio) and Spencer Wilton (Super Nova ll) were well-pleased with what they achieved with three exciting young horses on their team.

Graves was delighted to pull her country into silver medal spot backed up by great performances from Steffen Peters (Suppenkasper), Adrienne Lyle (Salvino) and Kasey Perry-Glass (Goerklintgaards Dublet). “I was feeling a bit under the weather today but adrenalin is an amazing thing, and this is an amazing team to ride on!” she said.

Sixth and final part of day 2 Grand Prix - what a final of the team competition

Queen Werth is back with her Bella Rose at WEG taking their first gold medal for this championship, but pretty sure it will not be the last.

200% focus from entering the centerline till letting the reins go, and letting the emotions take over ones again for World no 1 rider Isabell Werth.

Expressive start, nice extended trot with lots of freedom, lovely light super crossing supple half passes, open halt but nice rein back, super extended trot direct into passage, so easy and light into piaffe, then just standing there until the signal says forward, average of 9,6 from the judges and a score of 85,6% going into the walk tour, super transition to passage and another super piaffe tour, good transition to canter, bit conservative two times, super extended canter with risk and coming super back before the change, lot of time/space for the zig-zag, both series could show more ground cover, as both canter pirouettes lacking bit more clear canter rhythm, final extended trot with so much power and expression, and final centerline is just so easy. Very emotional Werth after final salut. 84,829%

Verdades and Laura Graves as no 2. Start with 89,286% after a super halt, very expressive diagonal, lack a bit more bend and flow for the half passes, nice halt with rein back, lack in general more sit for the piaffe tours, and it becomes very much like tense steps of the ground instead of balanced “sitting” trot a the spot, small tension in the corner for the collected walk, the canter tour is without major issues, but lack more clear canter beat and ground cover in general. 81,527%.

Patrik Kittel is one of many bringing a new championship horse for WEG, and with Well Done de la Roche he really has a new top horse. The lightness is similar to Bella Rose and the highlights are for sure also the passage and piaffe tours. 78,199% 4th place.

Glock´s Zonik N.O.P. with Edward Gal start with very nice expression and go, for the piaffe tours it becomes a bit cautious, and during the canter you get the feeling that Zonik lacking more natural go and willingness to performe, but very well managed from Edward. From H2R point of view the father Blue Hors Zack with Daniel Bachmann Andersen were clearly in front of Zonik and Gal today. Zonik is placed 7th with 77,189% while Zack is placed as no 10 with 76,211%, but also with some judging disagreement.

Spain’s Severo Jurado Lopez and Deep Impact showed a strong test with very much improved piaffe tours. Unfortunately an error crept in as Deep lost the canter for the 2nd pirouette. A costly mistake but still a great performance and most important for his team, the team tickets for Tokyo Olympics are secured.

GOLD for Germany, SILVER for USA and BRONZE for Great Britain.

The 30 best individual combinations are ready for Friday´s Grand Prix Special.

Charlotte Dujardin with Mount St. John Freestyle - photo credit: Lily Forado

Dujardin shows her world class with the just 9 year old mare MSJ Freestyle

Lots of power, quality and control gives a score of 77,764% into 2nd place individual for Britains former Olympic, World and European Champion rider Charlotte Dujardin with her new just 9 year old mare.

Good halt, expressive supple power extension, lack a bit more go and bend for half pass at right, good halt with rein back, power extension with super balance, straight back into passage of the day, incredible quality of the passage itself, lacking a bit the transitions and becomes a bit travelling with tension for the piaffe, but passage is just outstanding, super walk tour, bit lack of energy before going into the 2nd piaffe but becomes with nice activity, super two times, very well performed zig-zag, small error hind for the one times, lack a bit more strength to keep the correct active canter beat for the pirouettes, super transition and WOW final extended trot, super final passage and bit unbalanced piaffe.

Much more to reach for this couple in the future - this was just their start.

Fourth part of day 2 Grand Prix - Danish Daniel and Zack with top test

Smiling Daniel Bachmann Andersen with Blue Hors Zack - photo credit: Lily Forado

Highlight of this 4th part of the Grand Prix was for sure Danish top combination Daniel Bachmann Andersen with the breeding stallion Blue Hors Zack. They have showed great consistancy and at the same time gaining more and more quality for the exercises. And today they proved ones again here at Championship level with a great and well deserved score of 76,211% and right now placed individual as no 5 and will be ready among the 30 best combinations for Friday´s individuel Grand Prix Special.

Sönke Rothenberger with Cosmo - photo credit: Lily Forado

This part with absolute top combinations - Cosmo, Dante Weltino and Dublet

Cosmo and Sönke Rothenberger was on fire for today’s Grand Prix and well deserved with personal best and breaking the magical +80% with impressive 81,491%.

Fully focused all the way, starting with a slightly open halt and super up and forward, very expressive extended trot without taking risk, good half passes could be a bit more bend in the body though, super halt for rein back but going bit sideways in the rein back and stepping on the fence, tiny unbalance into the first piaffe, nice piaffe, top expression for the passage with lift and of the ground with super angles both front and hind, good extended walk could stretch a bit more, nice collected walk, 2nd piaffe tour in good balance and slightly forward trend, 2-3 trot steps before catching the canter transition, superb canter tour, well balanced zig-zag, super series with power and expression well performed pirouettes and super final centerline. They look like a serious contender for very noble metal not just for this team competition.

Therese Nilshagen with Dante Weltino OLD - photo credit: Lily Forado

Therese Nilshagen with Dante Weltino OLD - photo credit: Lily Forado

Swedens Therese Nilshagen and Dante Weltino OLD are just getting stronger and stronger together.

Nice entering halt, power extended trot with lengthning of the frame and at the same time very balanced bringing him back to collected trot, active half passes, superb halt but a bit quick rein back, easy piaffe and passage with good transitions, good extended walk but lack a bit more relaxation in the shoulders, good 2nd piaffe/passage tour, bit swinging two times, super uphill extended canter, nice zig-zag, 1 times in a good frame, bit big first pirouette while the second becomes more centered, power extended trot, loosing the final meters of passage while Dante wants to make the final halt. 76,040%

Kasey Perry-Glass with Gørklintgårds Dublet - photo credit: Lily Forado

Kasey Perry-Glass with Gørklintgårds Dublet - photo credit: Lily Forado

Kasey showed a strong and correct test with a few minor issues. The tongue became visual at the left side a couple of times, the zig-zag lacking more balance and clear bending and there crept in errors for the one time serie. Still very well scored with 76,739% taking over the 3rd place, and just in front of TSF Dalera BB with Jessica von Bredow-Werndl.

Both Spains Claudio Castilla Ruiz with Alcaide and Dutch Emmelie Scholtens with Apache showed strong tests. Castilla without any technical issues, while Scholtens had a small canter in the extended trot at the short diagonal and an error for the one times.

Carl Hester and his young Hawtins Delicato going in to these Championships with super form and showing an effortless and very correct test bringing them into the lead of the individual scoreboard with 77,283%.

Good halt and straight forward, nice extended trot in good balance, nice half passes in good rhythm and balance, super halt with nice rein back, good transition to passage, small tension into the first piaffe but catching well up with good rhythm, relaxed extended walk and good collected walk tour, smooth in and out of the 2nd piaffe with good and clear rhythm - easy picture, good series, bit big 1st pirouette while 2nd pirouette becomes more centered, good transition to trot and nice extended trot, very well performed final centerline.

Danish Betina Jæger Jensen with Mane Stream Belstaff - photo credit: Lily Forado

The 2nd day of the team competition started out with a clearly not fit Portuguese horse, but unfortunately the judge at C German Katrina Wuest did not ring the bell.

Danish Betina Jæger Jensen with Mane Stream Belstaff was the highlight of todays first part.

The big expressive huge mover showed his highlights for the ground covering bouncy and regular passage, super walk tour, big one times and powerful pirouettes. Unfortunately with some extra one times changes for the two times series, and there were a lost of balance for the first extended trot at the diagonal. The piaffe still lacking a bit more security. A very accurate (sharp on the letters) and well performed test with good power and expression. 70,140%

FEI PRESS RELEASE - Still all to play for when the action resumes tomorrow

Screen Shot 2018-09-13 at 11.47.35.png
Screen Shot 2018-09-13 at 11.47.38.png

Germany took the lead after the first day of Team Dressage at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018 today, but the defending champions have only a narrow lead over Sweden in silver and the USA in bronze medal position when the battle resumes in the morning. This halfway result is based on the best individual score for each team in today's Grand Prix, so there is plenty of room for dramatic change before the podium places are decided.

German domination was underpinned by the best performance of the day from Jessica von Bredow-Werndl (32) and the 11-year-old mare TSF Dalera BB whose mark of 76.77 gives her side a 1.4 point advantage over the Swedes.

A personal-best score of 75.248 from Juliette Ramel (31) and Buriel K saw them slot into second and dramatically boost Swedish chances. A total of 38 horse-and-rider combinations took their turn today, and another 39 will strut their stuff before the 2018 champions are crowned tomorrow evening.

The mighty Germans are chasing down their 12th world championship team title, and Von Bredow-Werndl has put them on track to achieve just that on her own world championship debut.

“I watched the first two horses from up in the stand with my brother Benni and I suddenly got the shivers and felt motivated because I realised how many other people would like to be in my shoes! So I went in there feeling full of power and Delera was just brilliant!"

Jessica von Bredow-Werndl (GER)

Ramel and Buriel KH were in the Swedish team that finished fifth at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games where they were hugely impressive. An accident while competing in Aachen (GER) last summer however put the horse out of action for quite some time. But the rider, who initially trained with The Netherlands’ Edward Gal and Hans Peter Minderhoud and who is now coached by Swedish star Patrick Kittel, has made an impressive comeback with the 12-year-old gelding this season when producing consistently good results, particularly in the Grand Prix Special. The top 30 combinations in the team event will qualify for individual medals in Friday’s Special, so Ramel will be one to look out for over the coming days.

The host nation snatched third place at this halfway stage of the team event when Adrienne Lyle finished individually fourth with Salvino this afternoon.

“I’m specially pleased with him since we warmed up in a complete downpour and then it was blazing hot the next second - fitness is a big factor here. He’s a big dark horse and I did my best to get him as fit as I could, and I’m glad I did because it took every ounce of the fitness he had out there in that heat!” Lyle said.

It’s far from over however, with the British threatening strongly in fourth place just 0.3 behind the Americans and looking set to rocket up the leaderboard when Carl Hester and Hawtins Delicato and Charlotte Dujardin riding Mount St John Freestyle take to the arena floor.

The Netherlands holds fifth place, Spain is in sixth and Denmark lies seventh of the 15 competing nations.
