Germany’s Benjamin Werndl (34) threw his hat into the ring for a place at the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Final next April when producing a spectacular victory with Daily Mirror at the fifth leg of the 2018/2019 Western European League in Salzburg, Austria today.

The pair’s performance wasn’t perfect, with a few glitches along the way, but the best bits weren’t just good - they were breathtaking. And with only three riders from each nation allowed into the Final, Werndl is putting intense pressure on his German counterparts for one of those slots after moving to the top of the leaderboard alongside compatriot Dorothee Schneider.

It was Sweden’s Patrik Kittel (42) who lined up second with Delatio while Schneider slotted into third with Faustus on a day when all of the leading partnerships really stepped it up to another level. Werndl was almost speechless with delight after topping both yesterday’s Grand Prix and today’s Freestyle.

"This horse is a gift…I’m having an unbelievable trip with him, he’s developed so much over the last few months and I can’t find the right words to describe how much it means to me!"

Benjamin Werndl (GER)

Werndl, whose sister Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, was on the gold medal winning team at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ (WEG) 2018 in September, was already lying second on the league table however following his win in Budapest (HUN) in September and points collected for fifth place at both the WEL opening leg in Herning (DEN) in October and the third leg in Stuttgart (GER) last month. It’s been a strong and steady progression, and it was clear today that there’s a lot more to come from Daily Mirror despite the fact that the gelding son of Damon Hill is 14 years old.

“There’s so much more potential in this horse, and now my job is to find out how to bring it out!” said the rider who was on the German long-list for the WEG. “He had a break of two years before he came to us a couple of years ago, so he still feels a bit like a young horse building up experience, and I really wasn’t expecting him to be so cool in this arena today - he’s just the perfect gentleman!” Werndl added.

He was eleventh to go of the 15 starters, and when his test kicked off with a double-pirouette followed by two-tempi changes and another double-pirouette on the centre line then it was obvious he meant business. Daily Mirror’s ground-eating extended walk earned a 9 from four of the five judges as the daring duo marched to the first over-80% score of 80.790. And then he had to sit back and watch four more formidable contenders.

Australia’s Kristy Oatley and Du Soleil posted 79.330 before Patrik Kittel and his new ride Delatio, which was competed by Great Britain’s Emile Faurie until July of this year and was runner-up for the Swede on their World Cup debut in Lyon last month, put 80.010 on the board to slot into second spot. And that’s where they would remain despite a lovely performance from European and World team gold medallist Schneider and her super-exciting “Grand Prix baby” - the 10-year-old gelding Faustus who scored 79.730 for third place.

Now that he has the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Final 2019 in his sights, Benny Werndl really wants to get there, but he knows the battle for one of the German slots is not yet over. “All the other ladies want to go there too, but at least now I have a good chance, and I’m hoping to get to another qualifier in either Amsterdam (NED) or Neumünster (GER) in the new year” he said.

1. Daily Mirror (Benjamin Werndl) GER 80.790

2. Delatio (Patrik Kittel) SWE 80.010

Electric, motivated and top controlled Grand Prix freestyle from Jessica and Dalera

Screen Shot 2018-12-08 at 18.54.37.png

Friday evening Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and TSF Dalera BB were dancing through their freestyle.

Fully concentrated, supple, positive electricity and top qualities all the way was the impression from watching Jessica and Dalera. This still very inexperienced mare just dances all the way without signs of doubt or insecurity for this high degree of difficult Grand Prix freestyle.

And from watching the test and compared to Isabell Werth with Emilio, it looked like a bigger difference than just 0,175%.

Day 4 at KWPN pre-selection - huge imprint from World Champion Glamourdale

VIDEOS - Personal Best with top performance from TSF Dalera BB and Jessica von Bredow-Werndl

Screen Shot 2018-12-06 at 18.21.12.png

Beautiful arena in Geneva today for the CDI5 Grand Prix class with another day of outstanding top sport.

From the start list it looked like a German combination for the winner spot, but quite surprisingly Isabell Werth with Emilio went into the 2nd place after 11 year old mare TSF Dalera BB with Jessica von Bredow-Werndl in the saddle.

Delera and Jessica also were part of the gold winning team in Tryon, even though Delera first made her international debut back in March this year, and has not done any indoor international shows since.

Personal Best with an outstanding performance and a level telling +80% after the trot tour, going down to 77% after the walk tour, as the collected walk becomes a bit unbalanced, super well managed canter tour where Jessica just rides forward to eliminate the small tensions, and at the same time shows super nice series, supple and well performed pirouettes, lovely balance and control back to trot at M and super final centerline. Fully deserved victory.

At the same time the “Queen” Isabell Werth showed a smooth and effortless test with Emilio, but today just into 2nd place.

Isabell Werth (GER) and Weihegold Old are back to number one in the FEI Dressage World Rankings, and also still holds third place with mount Bella Rose 2, here in Stuttgart (GER) at the FEI Dressage World Cup™ 2018/2019 Western European League earlier this month where she breezed in to win her second victory of the season. (FEI/ Leanjo de Koster)

Olympic silver individual and gold team medallist duo, Isabell Werth and Weihegold Old, have topped the FEI Dressage World Rankings once again, (2742 points), following their win  in the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Freestyle to Music at the Sweden International Horse Show ("Saab Top Ten Dressage 2018") in Stockholm (SWE) this weekend. The famous combination, who were number one for almost two years, from November 2016, only sat in second place for a couple of months behind Laura Graves and Verdades (USA). The American duo now drop back to second place again with 2714 points.

Dressage Queen Isabell Werth can be found three times in the top four of the ranking list, as she holds the third place with Bella Rose 2 (2690 points) and the fourth place with Emilio 107 (2658 points).

A number of other combinations moved up in the rankings, thanks to the Saab Top Ten Dressage 2018 and the FEI Dressage World Cup™ qualifier in Madrid (ESP) on 23-25 November 2018. Patrik Kittel with Delaunay Old (SWE) moved from the 97th to the 11th place (2280 points), whilst Daniel Bachmann Andersen and Blue Hors Zepter (DEN) jumped from the 175th to the 33rd place (2030 points). Claudio Castilla Ruiz and Alcaide (ESP) also made an enormous leap from the 118th to the 43rd place (1923 points).

With the FEI Dressage World Cup™ season continuing over the next few months there will certainly be more impressive changes in the ranking list.

Saab Top 10 podium. Left to right: Swedish chef d'equipe Bo Jenå, Håkan Buskhe, CEO SAAB, second placed Patrik Kittel, winner Isabell Werth, third placed Dorothee Schneider, judge by C Annette Fransen Iacobaeus, Ulf Rosengren, President SIHS.

Saab Top 10 podium. Left to right: Swedish chef d'equipe Bo Jenå, Håkan Buskhe, CEO SAAB, second placed Patrik Kittel, winner Isabell Werth, third placed Dorothee Schneider, judge by C Annette Fransen Iacobaeus, Ulf Rosengren, President SIHS.

Expectations were high for Sunday’s Saab Top 10 Dressage Grand Prix Freestyle to music and the world’s top-ranked riders would not disappoint the enthusiastic crowd.
For the ten riders, the stakes were high with a total of 232,000 Euro in prize money.

Everyone was on the edge of their seats when start number eight entered the arena. Isabelle Werth (GER) and Weihegold OLD, who won Saturday’s Top 10 class, were for sure crowd favorites. Isabell took it in stride, saying in a pre-ride interview:
– Our program has a high level of difficulty and we will do our best to deliver but we’re going there to have a lot of fun!
Isabell did just that and won with 89.775%. The victory was worth a total of 70,000 Euro.

- Watching Isabell ride makes you warm inside and she has an incredible understanding of her horse.
- The level of riding here is exceptional and the music and compositions are very good.  It doesn’t get any better than this, said expert commentator Pether Markne.

Patrik Kittel (SWE) and Delaunay OLD rocked the house, riding to the music of Guns ‘N Roses, landing him a second place with 85.875% and setting a new Swedish record.
- My choice of music was a bit daring and unusual. It was rocky, risky and really fit my horse, said Patrik.

Dorothee Schneider (GER), known for her fine compositions, rode to tango music with her horse Sammy Davis Jr. finishing third at 84.725%.
- My horse was calm, feeling good and working well with me here in Stockholm. It’s like he’s dancing with me and is always looking for more. We are very happy to be here, said Dorothee.

At the press conference, all riders had nothing but praise for the competition.
- The atmosphere was so electric you could feel it in the warm-up arena on the other side of the main curtain, Isabell said.

- I was very emotional and I had tears in my eyes while exiting the arena, said Patrik.

Swedish judge by C, Annette Fransen Iacobaeus was touched by the performances.
- Things just kept getting better and better. It was fantastic judging this competition.

Top sport, top audience and top price money

Sweden International Horse Show - a top event

You don’t have to be present to feel the great atmosphere in Friends Arena in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.

A huge program for all the days, and a great way not just with tough competition, but different ways to see the International riders, being a part of this huge event over the days, with both commentating and different games.

This morning with a packed arena on the grandstands and the audience were really supportive for every single combination.

Of course there is a huge organisation behind Sweden International Horse Show, but the main man behind SAAB Top 10 is for sure Patrik Kittel. He is the man behind the idea making an attractive top event where the best riders in the world will take part, have fun and at the same time fight for the big price money.

And to the question about how Kittel feels right now after the show “I feel so tired, but it is all worth it - an unreal cool show.”

The price money

A total sum of 2,5 mio Swedish Kroner, about 250.000 euros, with 73.000 euros for the winner of the freestyle, and with price money for all competitors.

The sport

The sport was outstanding from placement as no 10 up to the top of the field.

H2R comments during the competition:

Weihegold OLD GER - BIG smile for the final centerline from Werth, standing ovation and applauding audience for the final meters. You sometimes get in doubt if it is Werth following the music or the music following Werth - top harmony.

Delaunay OLD SWE - Kittel just nailed it with a super smooth test, top motivated Delaunay. Kittel is the KING of freestyle.

Sammy Davis Jr GER - super smooth test with lovely lightness and expression. The music suits very well all the way, just makes you smile, lean back and enjoy.

Damsey FRH GER - super test, lots of power and control without any technical issues, lovely balance and quality for the pirouettes, and of course the outstanding walk tour. Super nice harmony, small issues coming back from final extension at the diagonal. Super halts.

Don Auriello SWE - tense halt, but strong test and collecting a lot of valuable point for the canter tour, super on music with high degree of difficulty. Powerful final with super piaffe turn into extended trot.

Dante Weltino OLD SWE - bit difficult start as Dante gets a bit stocked from 1st piaffe. Catching up very well during the test, but some moments tense for series and piaffe tours today.

Blue Hors Don Olymbrio DEN - super nice supple trot tour with lovely half passes, good passage and piaffe tour, and piaffe turns, nice walk tour, small error for first 1 times but successful for the joker line, final center line lacking a bit more power and looks like Don O becomes a bit behind the aides (small misunderstandings).

Cennin NED - strong test without any technical issues, much better overall picture today even though still lacking more self carriage and lightness in the riders hands.

Wall Street SWE - start with a lot of tensions, but Juliette manage very well and settles very well during the test today.

Glocks Zonik NED - strong trot tour with nice piaffe/passage tours, lost balance out of 1st double pirouette, small error for 1st series of two times but succeeded with joker line. Slight smaller changes to right for 1 times.

Isabell Werth rode her star horse Weihegold OLD to victory in the Saab Top 10 Dressage Grand Prix. A confident, third straight win in Stockholm for the German World Champion gold medalist.

Fellow German rider Dorothee Schneider with Sammy Davis Jr. placed second at her first competition at Friends Arena.
- The Saab Top 10 is a great concept that will motivate riders on all levels. The Arena is incredible as well as the audience and I’m very happy to be here. I have a happy horse who likes to work so it makes it all that much easier to do well, said a smiling Dorothee.

Patrik Kittel claimed third place with his European Championship horse Delaunay OLD.
- I had the luxury of starting first so I could enjoy watching all the other riders who were absolutely top class! I’ve never seen these horses perform this well. When it was over I was hungry for more and didn’t want it to end, Patrik commented during the press conference.

The Saab Top 10 final really lives up to its name.
-The concept is great for the riders, horses and owners and is more than just about the cooperation between Swedish Dressage and Saab, Isabell Werth commented and praised Patrik and Saab for their hard work.

- Preparations have taken a lot of time and effort but we are now seeing results and the concept is really starting to bloom, Patrik said enthusiastically. Next year it will be even easier to get other riders involved.
- You can really see how this has developed riders in all areas - Junior, Young Rider and the U25 team, added Isabell.

Swedish chef d’Equipe Bo Jenå nodded in agreement
– I am very proud of the Top 10 development and look very much forward to our continued cooperation with Saab. We are already qualified for the Olympics in Tokyo for example, which allows us to relax a little and focus on training, coaching and development of our system and small details that will produce even better results in the long-term.

Håkan Buskhe, CEO for Saab, says the Top 10 would not be possible without Patrik.
-This program is very important for Saab and we are very happy with the progress so far. Our engagement with Top 10 is very exciting. It not only allows us to help Swedish Dressage, it helps us with our recruiting efforts as well.

- Saab has over 12,000 engineers but needs to recruit 1200 per year and preferably more women. Today we are pleased to announce that we plan to expand and extend the cooperation with Patrik Kittel to 2024.

There is an unmistakable enthusiasm and commitment in the press room that indicate the future is bright for Saab Top 10 and Swedish Dressage.

Next up on Sunday is the Saab Top 10 Dressage Grand Prix Freestyle.
Better dressage than this is hard to find!
