Missing among the premium stallions

Both no 32 by Bonds / Don Schufro was showing convincing qualities throughout the days, like no 35 by De Beau / Bordeaux was clearly missing among the premium stallions as this stallion showed himself really nicely by lunging.

The champion stallion will be available at the online auction together with no 26, 39, 70 and 75 starting tomorrow Monday 25 at 12 am

Dalera storms to victory for von Bredow-Werndl in Salzburg

Defending champions Werth and Weihegold have to settle for second as Germans scoop top four placings

It has been a long wait since the first leg was staged last October, but the resumption of the 2020/2021 FEI Dressage World Cup™ Western European League didn’t disappoint when Germany’s Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and TSF Dalera BB swept to victory in Salzburg, Austria today.

In a cracker of a competition, the pair who helped claimed team gold at the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games™ threw down a superb performance when second-last to go in the field of 13. And their score of 87.960 ousted the partnership that have claimed the coveted FEI Dressage World Cup™ title on the last three occasions, Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD who had to settle for runner-up spot on their mark of 84.720. 

Reminding the world that German dressage is in great shape, Helen Langehanenberg slotted into third with Annabelle when putting 81.340 on the board while Dorothee Schneider filled fourth place with Faustus when posting 80.650. Only one other horse-and-rider combination managed to break the 80 percent barrier, Swedish star Patrick Kittel steering Delaunay OLD into fifth on a mark of 80.125.

Halfway stage

It was another Swedish pair who held the lead at the halfway stage, Antonia Ramel and Brother de Jeu who were on the bronze medal winning side along with Kittel and Well Done de la Roche at the 2019 FEI European Championships in Rotterdam (NED). 

Ramel produced a lovely test from the 15-year-old gelding to score 77.460 today but, third to go after the break, Werth moved things on to a completely different level when scoring more than seven percent higher. And when both compatriot Langehanenberg and then Kittel couldn’t get close to bettering that, it seemed the writing was already on the wall. 

But von Bredow-Werndl had other ideas.

“I was really ready for it today because Dalera already felt amazing yesterday”, she pointed out. In Saturday’s Grand Prix she finished second to Werth, but that didn’t blunt her ambitions. 

“I came in today with the hope to win! We had a very stupid mistake yesterday when she fell into trot before the one-tempis because she thought it was already the last line for the extended trot, and that was more than expensive because the one-tempis count double. Today I knew if we got things right then we had a really good chance!”

And they got it absolutely right, the 34-year-old rider and her 14-year-old mare nailing it with a superb test that secured pole position by more than three percentage points over Werth who may not have been all that surprised, as she clearly wasn’t happy with her own performance, shaking her head as she left the arena. 

Today’s winning partnership had already beaten Werth and Weihegold twice before - at the FEI Dressage World Cup™ qualifier in Stuttgart (GER) in 2019 and at last year’s German Championships. Werth knew perfectly well that she needed a mistake-free test to keep the pressure on her fellow-countrywoman who is always a strong challenger, so when she didn’t get that she was always going to be vulnerable.

Season
 
Instead of a full season of qualifiers, the Western European League has been severely curtailed by the effects of the pandemic, and today’s leg at Salzburg was only the second in the lead-up to the 2021 Final which is scheduled for Gothenburg (SWE) from 31 March to 4 April. In this virus-ridden era it is difficult to predict anything anymore, but another qualifier is planned for ’s-Hertogenbosch (NED) in March and under the revised qualifying criteria the best two results from the Western European and Central European Leagues will count towards qualification.

Today’s result leaves von Bredow-Werndl at the top of the qualification table with Langehanenberg in second, Kittel in third, Morgan Barbancon from France in fourth and The Netherlands’ Thamar Zweistra and Ireland’s Anna Merveldt sharing fifth place.  Austria’s Christian Schumach lies seventh while Denmark’s Carina Cassoe Kruth, who collected eight points when finishing tenth today with Heiline’s Danciera, is in eighth place. A total of nine athletes will make the cut to the Final and Denmark’s Cathrine Dufour, who won the opening leg on home ground at Aarhus last October, at this stage shares that ninth spot with Germany’s Benjamin Werndl.

Environment

As von Bredow-Werndl pointed out today it’s not an easy environment for either horses or riders these days.

“Dalera was a bit nervous yesterday but I have to admit I was too! I realise now that it is too long for me to have a competition break for over three months - I really need to compete and so do the horses. Riding the test at home and going to a competition are two completely different things. 

"You need to measure yourself against the other competitors, and it’s a more honest way to look in the mirror if you do it at a competition"

She complimented Show Director Josef Goellner and his team for staging the Austrian event in such a difficult times. The show is taking place without spectators and with rigorous restrictions. “I’m so grateful that the organisers managed to do such a great job and that it was perfectly organised. Everyone feels safe here, everyone is wearing a mask and there is hand sanitiser everywhere - it’s strange, but I’m so glad to be here!”, she said.

She would like to compete in ’s-Hertogenbosch, but brotherly love may get in the way of that. “I want my brother (Benjamin Werndl) to have a chance to go there because he already won one qualifier (at Zakrzow, Poland in October) and he needs to go to another one, and there are usually only four Germans allowed to ride”, she explained. 

When it comes to the Final in Gothenburg however, nothing will hold her back. “Oh yes, I’ll be going there for sure - and with all guns blazing!”, she said.

Today’s starter field were all showing motivated, fresh and well prepared horses.

From the detailed score board non of the judges seems to consider any deduction for this “exercise”.

Chasing important World Cup point

For every combination this year is a pure run for enough points to qualify for the finals, and as the current schedule tells there will only be one more qualifier before the planned finals in Gothenburg in April.

One of the combinations aiming for the final is Danish Carina Cassøe Krüth with her 10 year old Fürstenball daughter Heiline´s Danciera, and at the same time collecting valuable international experience as they are one of the Danish long list combinations for the Olympics in Tokyo.

“Danciera was very impressed by the arena today, and it obviously gave us some challenges as she was not fully focused on me all the way. Missing the clear transition for our first passage, 2 x error for our 2 times and a small error by the zigzag. Actually the final piaffe tour today was our best where she really gave a great feeling. We just have to step up for tomorrow´s freestyle hopefully with full focus on each other. I really look forward performing our freestyle,” tells Carina after today’s World Cup Grand Prix.

Another successful debut test for 🇩🇰Danish Nanna Merrald with Atterupgaards Orthilia

Orthilia was fully focused together with a sharp Nanna Merrald showing another clean quality test today - their first ever Grand Prix Special test together.

“It´s been a great and successful experience together with Orthilia here in Austria. She is very easy to bring to a show, happy and relaxed in the stable. I’m also very thankful that my long time trainer Michael Søgaard was here to support me by the training and warm up - it means a world to me. I really feel motivated to join the next show together with Orthilia, tells Nanna.

German big guns out in force

Reigning five-time series champion and World No. 1, Germany’s Isabell Werth, heads the sparkling start-list for the FEI Dressage World Cup™ qualifier in Salzburg, Austria this weekend.

She will partner Weihegold OLD, the 16-year-old mare with which she claimed the prestigious title at the last three Finals, in Omaha (USA) in 2017, Paris (FRA) in 2017 and Gothenburg (SWE) in 2019. 

And the German challenge will be mighty one, as Werth is joined by compatriots Jessica von Bredow-Werndl who holds the World No. 3 spot and Olympians Dorothee Schneider and Helen Langehanenberg. 

Only one other leg of the 2020/2021 Western European League qualifying series has taken place so far, at Aarhus in Denmark in October where the host nation’s Cathrine Dufour and Bohemian came out on top. 

The Covid-19 pandemic has played havoc with the sporting calendar worldwide for almost a year now, but there is great excitement about the resumption of the prestigious FEI Dressage World Cup™ series that is now in its 36th season - the 35th cut short by effect of the virus.

10 nations

A total of 14 athletes from 10 nations will compete this weekend including Swedish showman Patrick Kittel with Delaunay OLD, the 15-year-old gelding with which he finished sixth at the 2018/2019 Final on home ground in Gothenburg. And also flying the Swedish flag will be Antonia Ramel and Brother de Jeu who, alongside Kittel and Well Done de la Roche, helped claimed team bronze at the 2019 FEI European Dressage Championships in Rotterdam (NED). 

Anna Merveldt and her 12-year-old Lusitano gelding Esporim went into the history books when helping Ireland to Olympic qualification in Dressage for the very first time at those Rotterdam Championships, and they come to Salzburg with some strong recent results. They were runners-up behind the French duo of Morgan Barbançon and the 15-year-old stallion Sir Donnerhall ll OLD in the Freestyle at Budapest-Fót (HUN) in October where the French pair, who will be back in the ring this weekend, also dominated the Grand Prix.

Germany’s von Bredow-Werndl brings the horse with which she holds that No. 3 spot in the World Rankings, the 14-year-old Trakehner mare TSF Dalera BB. Schneider will partner the 13-year-old gelding Faustus who won the CDI4* Grand Prix Special at Oldenburg (GER) in November and Langehanenberg will ride the 13-year-old mare Annabelle which won the CDI3* Grand Prix Special at Aarhus last October.   

Represented

The Netherlands will be represented by Thamar Zweistra and the 13-year-old stallion Hexagon’s Double Dutch who finished third in the Grand Prix and Freestyle at the CDI-W fixtures in both Mariakalnok (HUN) last June and at Pilisjászfalu (HUN) in August 2020. 

Italy’s Francesco Zaza (Wispering Romance), Denmark’s Carina Cassoe Kruth (Heiline’s Danciera), Belgium’s Simon Missiaen (Charlie), Australia’s Simone Pearce (Destano) and Austria’s Franziska Fries (Atomic) are also in the mix. So it is going to be a truly international cast that takes centre-stage at the Messezentrum Arena in the city so closely associated with both revered composer, Mozart, and the much-loved 1965 film “The Sound of Music”.

The FEI World Cup™ Dressage Grand Prix is scheduled for 08.00 local time on Saturday 23 January, while the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Freestyle will take place on Sunday 24 January starting at 11.00.

Werth sharp as usual this time with DSP Quantaz, Fiderdance and Waldmann with a consistant quality test and super debut for Blue Hors rider Nanna Merrald with Atterupgaards Orthilia.

Even though Werth was not a fan of the mandatory use of helmet rule from 1st January, it was a brilliant look. DSP Quantaz is a typical Quaterback power horse and he suits Werth perfectly and gives an impressive overall picture with today’s convincing 78% winner test today.

Lena Waldmann showed Fiderdance in a very nice contact, for some moments a bit high in the neck but easy and effortless overall picture.

International debut placement for 🇩🇰Danish Nanna Merrald with former British Olympic team horse Atterupgaards Orthilia, now 16 year old, bred by Stud Atterupgaard. Nanna recently took over the ride from owner Agnete Kirk Thinggaard, and judged from today’s debut performance this new combination has something to offer for the future. Atterupgaards Orthilia has not been at start since October 2018, and Agnete Kirk Thinggaard only did three international shows with the mare.

Nanna and Orthilia showed a very harmonious picture with an error free secure test. After the test Nanna was of course very pleased. “Our test went as planned as the main goal was an error free test and therefore of course also a bit conservative test, and I’m very happy to back at the international scene with such a top quality horse,” tells Nanna Merrald.

14 føl i vente hos Nedergaard Dressage på Nordfyn

I efteråret flyttede Vicki Nedergaard til hende ejendom på Nordfyn, hvor et større renoverings- og ombygningsarbejde stod for dagen. Da efteråret viste tænder stod løsdriftsstalden klar til at huse alle avlshopperne. Til marts kommer de første føl hos Nedergaard Dressage.

I gennem en lang årrække har Vicki målrettet gået efter at avle moderne rideheste, som går op ad bakke med power og ikke mindst 3 gangarter. Filosofien har været solide Hannoveraner hoppestammer med kvalitet, da Vicki mener at afsættet til den optimale ridehest tager udgangspunkt i en stærk overlinie og skarpe bagben. Med det for øje valgte Vicki tilbage i 2016 at benytte KWPN hingsten Asgard´s Ibiza for første gang. Kvaliteterne som Vicki mener er åbenlyse ved ham selv er at han er super udtryksfuld, flot eksteriør med en særdeles flot front, med stor knæ aktion, og smidige gangarter med en særdeles god skridt.

Med kombinationen af den solide Hannoveraner grundstamme, med forædlingen via Hohenstein, var ønsket en smuk hest som vender rigtigt og bevæger sig let og kraftfuldt bagfra i alle 3 gangarter, med flot front og mere knæ aktion. Kronen på værket hedder Iron, som jo iøvrigt ikke behøver nærmere præsentation. Ikke kun de danske avlere har set Iron´s kvaliteter, hvor han topper listen over de unge hingste med 60 bedækninger i 2020, for tyskerne også har benyttet ham flittigt, ligesom han også er benyttet i Holland. Hoppestammen på Iron tæller 4 på hinanden følgende statspræmierede hopper.

“Glæder mig vildt til min årgang 2021 føl, især nu vi venter 7 føl efter Iron, og se hans første føl på mine egne avlede hopper. Samtidig har jeg 4 søstre til Iron som også er ifolet,” fortæller Vicki.

“For 2021 har jeg lyst til måske at lave et par Bordeaux afkom mere, for synes han har gjort det godt i avlen og super heste under ryttere rundt om i Europa. Må sige den hollandske Las Vegas vil jeg kigge endnu mere på i 2021 og venter jo i spænding allerede et enkelt føl efter ham. Celle hingstene Von-und -zu (e. Vitalis/Floriscount) og Venido e. (Blue Hors Veneziano/Sir Donnerhall I) kunne være spændende at prøve på noget hollænder blod”, siger Vicki.

Iron afkom - “En sommerdag på folden”

Due to a very restricted pre-selection for the stallion licensing 2021, it became a challenge to be able to organise the pre-selections, where two judges were on the road visiting the stables in order to evaluate and judge the young stallions.

It is always interesting to follow the young stallions on their way towards the licensing, and luckily many of the owners caught their stallions by the lunging at the pre-selection.

LaGoy-Weltz and Rassing’s Lonoir Dominate Day Two of the 2021 Adequan® Global Dressage Festival

Wellington, FL – January 15, 2021 – Day two of the Lloyd Landkamer Memorial Week at the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival concluded on Friday, January 15, after Olivia LaGoy-Weltz (USA) and Rassing’s Lonoir bested an impressive lineup of riders in the day’s FEI Grand Prix CDI-W, presented by Lövsta. The first week of AGDF continues through Sunday, January 17, and the circuit hosts 10 weeks of international and national dressage competition until April 4. In their first international competition since February 2020, LaGoy-Weltz and the 17-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding (by De Noir 3) owned by LaGoy-Weltz and Mary Anne McPhail came out on top, earning a score of 73.978%. Second place in the class went to Great Britain’s Susan Pape on Harmony's Don Noblesse, Harmony Sporthorses’ 14-year-old Hanoverian stallion by Dancier, who ended with a 73.022%. Third place was awarded to Yvonne Losos De Muniz (DOM) on Aquamarijn, her own 16-year-old KWPN mare by United, earning a 71.717%.

“I’m really happy with how this has started off,” began LaGoy-Weltz. “We went out and rode in a national competition last week, and it was harmonious, but plain. It served its purpose to go out and ‘shake out the bats,’ and that’s part of the strategy. We’ve been trying to push it to the next level with Lonoir. I’ve kept him quiet for so many years, but there is a lot of horse in there. The goal was to push that more today; we did, [but] we had a few costly bobbles in the zigzag and in the pirouette. We can fix that next time. I know that [coaches] Debbie [McDonald], Ali [Brock], and Charlotte [Bredahl] say that he has never looked better. That’s a good place to start, so we want to keep going from there.”

LaGoy-Weltz and the gelding enjoyed some downtime this summer when major shows were put on hold, hacking and waiting for competition to resume. “After everything came to a screeching halt last year,” she explained, “we finished in such a good place and were like, ‘Now what?’ With a 16, coming 17-year-old horse, we didn’t want to keep him in that spot all summer long, so we did a lot of working on things but also a lot of hacking and hills, with a goal to ramp back up slowly down here. So far it seems to be going okay!”

“As the duo prepares for the remainder of the season and beyond, LaGoy-Weltz is planning accordingly with her team, including coaches Debbie McDonald and Allison Brock. “The plan is to keep options open and pick what is right for Lonoir,” she said. “You never know what is going to happen these days [due to COVID], so we are keeping it open. We will switch over to some Grand Prix Specials eventually. We just have to determine whether it's for the four star, or if we are going to wait for the five star, and then decide what we really want to do.”

She concluded, “Ali stops by in the afternoons once a week, and we take that and check in with Debbie, so Debbie is very much still a part of our work. They’re both amazing and work so well together. Everyone ultimately wants the same thing: more up, more sit, more hind legs, more electricity, more perfection!”

In the FEI Intermediate I CDI3*, Kevin Kohmann (GER) marked his second victory of the week with the 11-year-old Equitas LLC-owned KWPN stallion Five Star, by Amazing Star, earning a 73.353%. Second place went to Joanne Vaughan (GEO) and her own 10-year-old gelding Forbes, by Fidertanz, with a 61.059%.

Three top stallions from today's KWPN lunging

From 8 am till 4.30 pm today with lunging of the young stallions selected for 2nd KWPN licensing inspection.

This year the stallions were overall much better prepared for the lunging. The lunging part is obviously essential in order to judge the future perspectives.

From today no 426 by Geniaal / Hotline, no 417 by Franklin / Blue Hors Zack and no 507 by Jerveaux / Dream Boy showed top qualities, with nice self carriage and a natural frame.

417 - Super handsome and well balanced Franklin son with nice supple body in all three gaits.

426 - Real stallion type showing power and balance with sharp hindlegs with power from first step.

507 - Supple power boy with superb expression. Lovely self carriage.
