Cathrine Dufour in a spectacular win in Herning at the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Western European League

Cathrine Dufour (DEN) entered her 18-year-old gelding Atterupgaards Cassidy as her partner in the opening leg of the FEI Dressage World Cup™ in Herning (DEN) - and won!

In 2017 the Cathrine Dufour and Atterupfaards Cassidy won the FEI Dressage World Cup™ at the same venue and tonight in front of an enthusiastic home crowd they showed a foot perfect freestyle owning them 87,115% from the five judges. The home crowd rose to their feet – cheering her and Cassidy on.

Cathrine Dufour: ”With Carina’s score, there was quite big pressure on us when we entered the ring. But we had some extra few seconds before the start, so when I picked up canter, he felt really sharp. And then the Danish crowd is fantastic. It is just breath-taking. Since this is one of Cassidy’s last shows, it was special to go in there and show that he is still sharp. I know that he is in really good shape, and he can do it – and he really proved that today. I am super proud of him”.

Carina Cassøe Krüth and her 10-year-old mare Heiline’s Danciera by Fürstenball danced together in their difficult freestyle, making everything seem easy and smooth. With a score of 86,395% her personal best, she ended second after her teammate from the Olympics in Tokyo, Cathrine Dufour.

Carina Cassøe Krüth: “She is just a super good friend in there. She is so honest, and she does everything I want from her, and even more. – She is just amazing. When the audience started clapping it was quite early, so I though ‘well you are going to do that for a while’, but it was very cool, and I think the Danish audience knows by now that they can applause as she likes it”.

The Dutch rider Dinja van Liere and her only 9-year-old stallion Hermes by Easy Game did their first indoor show in Herning, and she was very pleased with her ride in the freestyle earning her a third place with a score of 84,360%.

Dinja van Liere: “I was very pleased with him, and he did a very good job. Yesterday we had a couple of mistakes, but it was the first time we did the short Grand Prix. He doesn’t have that much experience, so I was very happy today and he did a really good freestyle test.

He was a bit impressed by the audience, but he was very cool in there. He is very handsome, and he knows it. I am just very proud of him”.

Cathrine Dufour burst into tears after her ride, it was an amasing and special feeling for her. Since she was a junior-rider Atterupgaards Cassidy by Caprimond has been her partner, and emotions ran high when she entered the arena for the prize giving ceremony.

The FEI Dressage World Cup™ in Herning was also the debut of the new version of the short Grand Prix – this short Grand Prix will be used throughout the World Cup season. Cathrine Dufour states: “I am really positive as I find it horse-friendly that we can ride the short Grand Prix. Of course, you have to get out there from the very first second and a single mistake can cause a huge drop in the marks, but I am really pleased with it. I think it is very fun to do something else. I find it fun.”

Judge at C, Hans-Christian Matthiesen congratulated the riders with some wonderful freestyle test. On the short Grand Prix he commented: “I look for the good flow in a test and in this test I found it. It makes the sport more exciting, but it is a tough test.”

The riders praised the organisation, and the quality of the venue and stabling – the friendliness of everybody involved was highly applauded by the riders.

Cathrine Dufour: “From a rider’s perspective, this is one of my favourites shows not only because it is on Danish soil – everything from the stables to the training areas. People are so friendly and always helpful. It is really a fantastic way to start the season.”

Dinja van Liere agreed with Dufour and commented: “I think this is a good first World Cup and really well organised. I think it puts a lot of pressure on the other shows to keep up with the high performance. It was very nice to be here, and I am going home with a wonderful feeling.”

Together with Casper Cassøe, Jens Trabjerg is the organiser of the World Cup Herning as well as the ECCO FEI World Championships 2022 in Herning. Jens Trabjerg states: “I would like to thank the amazing audience. The audience even stays for the prize giving ceremony. I hope that all of you riders have a note in your calendar in August next year for the Herning2022 World Championships.”

All three riders stated how they will aim for the FEI Dressage World Cup™ final in Leipzig, Germany in April.

Only 14 contenders for first leg of FEI World Cup in Herning

The expectations for the Danish combinations were of course high as it was the Olympic girls back in the arena.

The short Grand Prix format suits the World Cup pretty well (when watching from the side line).

Cathrine Dufour and her 18 year old Atterupgaards Cassidy did their job. Cassidy looked fit even though they performed their trot half passes way under tempo like more of the other combinations also did. Dufour showed an effortless, high quality canter tour and not least what made the clear victory in Friday evenings World Cup Grand Prix an error free test.

Heiline´s Danciera and Carina Cassøe Krüth were on fire, more settled with stronger piaffe tours but unfortunately she like lost momentum just like out of the blue after the first five well performed flying changes and dropped into trot. Of course a very costly error - and yesterday it was actually the lost victory.

3rd placed was 9 year old Hermés with Dinja van Liere. This combination just shows a lot of surplus all the way, among the highlights were the trot half passes, power supple with super bending and uphill. Lovely frame and outline all the way with a nice contact, super quality for piaffe and passage and transition, for the canter tour two errors crept in. It was also their very first indoor show at Grand Prix level.

Other Danish combinations

Nanna Merrald and Blue Hors Zack showed a strong start, supple, fit and motivated Zack. During their test maybe a bit to motivated as he look pretty strong and for some moments he becomes a big stallion with a lady in the saddle. Unfortunately errors for both series.

Bufranco and Charlotte Heering is a very harmonious pair showing a lot of correct nice things, but for the piaffe and passage tours you could wish for a bit more power and expression. They showed an error free test.

Thranegaardens Rostov and Lone Bang with their World Cup debut. Technical strong performance, for the passage tours some tensions are showing hind, but overall a very nice debut and they also took the final placement for the World Cup Grand Prix.

Rock Star and Anna Kasprzak also showed a solid performance, for some moments Rock Star becomes narrow in the frame and the balance for the trot half passes is still a difficult task. A single error creeping into the two times.

Denmark’s Dufour headlines season-opener in Herning

A year ago, Denmark’s Cathrine Dufour rode the up-and-coming Bohemian to victory in both the Grand Prix and Freestyle at the opening leg of the FEI Dressage World Cup™ 2020/2021 Western European League. With the pandemic biting hard, the event was staged at the Danish National Equestrian Centre in Vilhelmsborg instead of its traditional venue in Herning, and it would be one of just two legs to be held before the series had to be abandoned as the world ground to a halt. 

This Saturday, 23 October, the action returns to Herning for the opening round of the 2021/2022 season which includes nine qualifying legs in total. And this time Dufour will ride Atterupgaards Cassidy, the wonderful little chestnut gelding whose last big international win was at the penultimate leg of the 2019/2020 Western European League in Gothenburg, Sweden in February 2020. 

It was the second successive FEI World Cup™ victory at the Scandinavium Arena for the sensational pair who, in 2017, exploded onto the world stage when taking bronze in both the Grand Prix Special and Freestyle at the FEI European Championships. That day, Dufour paid tribute to the brilliant little chestnut gelding that has brought her right to the very pinnacle of the sport.

she said. He’s 18 this year and still in flying form, so she’s bringing him out again this week for what she says may be one of his last shows.

Host nation

The host nation contingent for this first qualifier of the new season includes all the Danish dressage athletes who lined out at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in August where the team finished just off the podium and where Dufour also finished fourth individually with Bohemian. 

Carina Cassøe Krüth (Heiline’s Danciera) and Nanna Skodberg Merrald (Blue Hors Zack) will partner their Tokyo rides as will Charlotte Heering (Bufranco) who was reserve athlete at the Games, and they will be joined by Anna Kasprzak (Rock Star 13) and Lone Bang Larsen (Thranegaardens Rostov) when flying the home flag.

However Germany is more than well-represented by horsewoman extraordinaire Ingrid Klimke (Franziskus 15), Helen Langehanenberg (Annabelle 110) and Frederic Wandres (Hot Hit 3) on the startlist.

Klimke is a five-time Olympian and multiple champion in the sport of Eventing, and was vying for selection in both Eventing and Dressage for the Tokyo Games until an accident earlier this year saw that dream shattered. Now well-recovered, and just weeks after taking team silver and individual fifth place at the FEI Eventing European Championships 2021 in Avenches, Switzerland, she brings the 13-year-old dressage stallion Franziskus with which she won the Grand Prix at Dortmund CDI4* in March 2020. Three months earlier the pair finished second to compatriots Isabell Werth and Frederic Wandres in the Grand Prix and the Special on home ground at Stuttgart, and there will be many eyes following their progress at the Danish fixture this weekend.

Langehanenberg has competed at five FEI Dressage World Cup™ Finals and scooped the title with the great Damon Hill NRW in 2013.

Qualifying points

Dutch riders on the lookout for early-season qualifying points towards the series Final which will take place in Leipzig, Germany next April are Marlies van Baalen (Go Legend), Vincent van Gasselt (Delacroix 11) and Thamar Zweistra (Hexagon’s Double Dutch). 

Sweden’s Patrik Kittel always creates a stir, and he competes this weekend with Fiontini, the 11-year-old Danish-bred mare that won gold at the FEI WBFSH World Championships for Young Dressage Horses in 2015, 2016 and 2017 with Spain’s Severo Jurado Lopez in the saddle. Owner, Denmark’s Andreas Helgstrand, took over the ride in 2020 and recently passed the mare on to Kittel to compete. 

The new pairing finished third in the Grand Prix and fourth in the Freestyle at CDIO5* Aachen (GER) last month, and there is great excitement about what lies ahead for them. Also lining out for Sweden are Jeanna Hogberg (Lorenzo), Jennie Larsson (Zircoon Spring Flower) and Jacob Noerby Soerensen (Sheeran). 

The FEI Dressage World Cup™ 2021/2022 series will move on to Lyon (FRA) at the end of the month and then to Madrid (ESP) in November. Legs in London (GBR) and Mechelen (BEL) will bring the year to an end in December and then Amsterdam (NED) gets things underway again in January. Neumunster (GER) and Gothenburg (SWE) will host legs in February while ’s-Hertogenbosch (NED) will present the last qualifying opportunity in early March.

It’s all about to get underway with the Grand Prix taking place at the Jyske Bank Boxen Arena in Herning this Friday at 19.00 local time and the points-deciding Freestyle on Saturday at 18.30.

Cathrine Dufour has entered Atterupgaards Cassidy as her partner in the opening leg of the FEI Dressage World Cup™ in Herning (DEN). Together with Carina Cassøe Krüth, Nanna Skodborg Merrald, and Charlotte Heering, Dufour completes the Danish Olympic team that competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and will attend the opening leg of the World Cup Western European League.

The Danish Olympic national team athletes are ready to entertain and fascinate the audience and judges at the FEI Dressage World Cup ™ in Herning in October. Cathrine Dufour, Carina Cassøe Krüth, Nanna Skodborg Merrald, and Charlotte Heering will give the spectators in Jyske Bank Boxen a memorable experience, as they compete against each other in the most prestigious individual competition in the sport, riding in front of an enthusiastic home crowd in Boxen.

The opening qualifier of the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Western European League returns to Herning after a detour to the National Equestrian Center Vilhelmsborg in Aarhus last year due to COVID-19. This popular competition is back at the exhibition center, MCH in Herning from 20 - 24 October.

Jyske Bank Boxen and Blue Hors Arena M form the framework for the Jumping and Dressage competitions as well as the afternoon show Saturday, prior to the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Freestyle and DWB foal auction.

Cathrine Dufour: I'm really looking forward to it!

29-year-old Cathrine Dufour won the FEI Dressage World Cup ™ qualifier on Atterupgaards Cassidy at Herning in 2017. With the age of 18 years, Cassidy’s spectacular career draws to a close, earning medals at five European Championships (two Juniors, two Young Riders, and one Senior). They were part of Denmark’s 2016 Olympic Team, and this summer they claimed their 5th victory in the Danish National Championship.

Cathrine Dufour, now No. 2 on the FEI Dressage World Rankings, has entered Cassidy in Herning, the first of nine qualifying rounds in the Western European League, where league points are accumulated towards places in the Final, which takes place in Leipzig, Germany next April.

"I am really looking forward to being back in Herning. To be honest I have the most amazing memories from the World Cup in Herning. The first year, riding Cassidy and beating Isabell Werth was very special. This year I am bringing Cassidy and expectations are always high when I bring him. This is maybe one of his last shows, so I just want to enjoy being at the competition with him again. And I am excited riding the short Grand Prix for the first time, says Cathrine Dufour adding: It’s going to be super fun and I can’t wait.”

A strong lineup for the World Cup

The Danes will undoubtedly meet tough competition with the likes of the German riders Ingrid Klimke/Franzizkus and Helen Langehanenberg/Annabelle, the Duch rider Dinja van Liere/Hermes and the Swedish/Danish combination Patrik Kittel and the Danish Warmblood mare Fiontini, three times gold medal winner at the Young Horse Championships.

“I am looking forward to Herning. Fio is in top shape, and I could not be more proud of her, she is a real star,” states Patrik Kittel.

The young stallion has already been successful at the German Bundeschampionate and also at Oldenburger Landesturnier. Fynch Hatton brings a lot of well balanced power into the arena.

Flamboyant R - colt

Well-build and refined dressage colt with a lovely masculine expression. A foal with open frames and very agile. He has an excellent movement in trot and canter with up-hill tendency and good impulsion.

GD Elite mare is the mother of the ERDH mare Lobergs Hanka and Lobergs Arthur, who today starts dressage at Grand Prix level.

From the preliminary test My Vitality by Vivaldi / D-Day (full brother of Vitalis and bred in The Netherlands) and Eric stood out even though they came 2nd but for the final they also clearly convinced the judges, and from the “side line” their scoring looked liked an average of at least 9,5. Super supple, well balanced, obedient and attentive. A very exciting stallion for the future sport and with Spanish rider Eric Guardia Martinez in the saddle they look like the perfect match.

Scores: Trot 9.4 - walk 9 - canter 9.4 - ride ability 9.7 - capacity 9.5 = total 94.00

5 year old

No surprice that Danish Warmblood World Champion combination Hesselhøj Down Town by Hesselhøj Donkey Boy / Blue Hors Zack (bred by Dorthe Sjøbeck Hoeck and Hans Jørgen Hoeck) with Jeanna Högberg also took the Danish national title with nearly maximum score. From the “side line” Jeanna is able to let go and Down Town is just cruising around fully balanced all the way just in a bit to high speed.

6 year old

Danish Warmblood silver medal mare Sweetnes by Blue Hors St. Schufro / Tailormade Lancelot (bred by Lisbeth B. Andersen) with Silje Bakken in the saddle were on top form today and really showed their qualities and potential together. Recently they just didn’t have the luck and some tiny issues made their top placements stay away. This mare just brings so much power and super overall qualities. They came into the finals from a 5th place in the preliminary round.

Scores: Trot 8.9 - walk 9.2 - canter 9.5 - ride ability 9 - capacity 9.3 - Total = 91.800

7 year old

Marianne Helgstrand and Danish Warmblood gelding Eleverhøjs Raccolto by Sezuan / Sandro Hit (bred by Berith Nielsen) were well deserved at top of the scoreboard when finishing the 7 year old class today.

They recently finish WCYH in Verden with a 5th place in the final and a great 2nd spot from preliminary round after her husband Andreas Helgstrand with Jovian.

Danish Warmblood in top of today’s 5 year old class

For the 5 year old preliminary test today the Danish Warmblood World champion Hesselhøj Down Town showed his outstanding qualities entering the arena as it was just his arena and just wanted to show off together with Jeanna Högberg. Fully focused and powerful all the way, for some moments the tempo for the trot tour became a bit to much forward, but nevertheless he never lost momentum. Scoring: Trot 10 - walk 9.5 - canter 10 - ride ability 10 - capacity 9.8 = total 98,600.

2nd today Tophøjs Diadora with another outstanding performance from Spanish Eric Guardia Martinez. His way of showing the mare and keeping her focused all the way even though the canter tour today becomes with some tensions and not really a 9,0.

The mare Svalegårds Hot Zalina with Michael Grønne Christensen is a pure Grand Prix horse but still only 5 year old.

With Fynch Hatton Andreas Helgstrand has another high quality stallion under saddle. From H2R point of view his trot tour today was even better than Down Town as it was more controlled all the way, but still only scoring 9,3!

6 year old class

Just WOW test from Kasprzak Dressage rider Josefine Hoffmann with the mare RGS Finest Alegra. Super supple, obedient, correct, expressive, well balanced and not least today’s most soft and steady contact - a real dream test. They definitely look like a clear champion combination. They were well deserved rewarded with a 10 for ride ability. Scoring: Trot 9.3 - walk 9.7 - canter 9 - ride ability 10 - capacity 9.5 = total 95.000

Huge development for Sir Floresco by Sir Heinrich / Floresco and presented well balanced in a super frame and contact by spanish rider Moisés Azuar. You maybe could wish for a bit more under the gravity push from behind for the trot work but very rhythmical and balanced.

H2R personal favourite for the final is My Vitality with Spanish rider Eric Guardia Martinez in the saddle. Super happy supple combination, as both of them looked very comfortable and harmonious throughout their performance today. My Vitality shows huge ride ability and qualities without any tensions. H2R goes all in for the stallion performance test winner for the final.

VIDEOS top 3 in preliminary 7 year old test at Danish national championships

Today’s preliminary 7 year old class was a very early bird with start time at 7 am followed by 4 year old preliminary class as Blue Hors is also hosting the Young Horse Championships in Jumping.

The strong Danish combinations from World Championships Young Horses 2021 were also ready for the national championships.

Today’s winner Marianne Helgstrand with Elverhøjs Raccolto showed a strong test without any technical issues. For some moments Raccolto became a bit tight in the neck with somewhat strong contact.

Lovely mare with super expression and lots of quality throughout the test, unfortunately lost the canter at the short side after the three times.

16 special dressage foals selected for Danish Warmblood World Cup foal auction Saturday 23 October

7 colts and 9 fillies are selected for DWB World Cup foal auction

The auction takes place during the World Cup event with first leg of 2021/2022 season. The pre-bidding will start the 21 of October and the final part of the auction will be LIVE in Herning Saturday 23 October at 5 pm.

Also this time one of the very well known and successful breeders Stutteri Worre is represented with two very interesting fillies from the best mare lines and with very attractive international Grand Prix sires.

Worre My Dream by Glock´s Dream Boy / Blue Hors St. Schufro is a very interesting filly for both sport and breeding. Both Dream Boy (with Dutch Olympic rider Hans Peter Minderhoud) and St. Schufro (with Danish Olympic rider Nanna Merrald) has proven themselves in the sport and breeding with top qualities in the Grand Prix sport and with very rideable and talented offsprings.

Worres Nikita by Glamourdale / Franklin shows power and suppleness from both sire and dam sire.

Glamourdale recently scored Person Best in his 2nd ever international Grand Prix Special in Aachen with impressive 77,170% together with British Charlotte Fry. Franklin has during the years proven himself as a top foal producer, recently Franklin was named Elite stallion in Danish Warmblood and now we also starts to see him as dam sire in the future breeding. This filly is also a very interesting prospect for both sport and breeding.
