Helen and Annabelle turn on the magic in Madrid

It was a very particular triumph for German star Helen Langehanenberg when topping the third leg of the FEI Dressage World Cup™ 2021/2022 Western European League in Madrid, Spain this evening. The 39-year-old athlete is a former winner of the prestigious series, an Olympian and this summer became a European team gold medallist. But today’s success was all the sweeter because her brilliant but sensitive mare Annabelle really showed what she can do when she settles to her job.

“She is such a very special horse, full of talent but with so much temperament that she is not always easy, but I’m very happy today. I was last to go and there was plenty of pressure but that’s good for me, it means I just have to go for it! And today she allowed me to support her and it felt really good”, Langehanenberg said.

Chasing

She was chasing the score of the very first of the 12 athletes into the ring, Spanish superstar Beatriz Ferrer-Salat who set a really tough target for the rest when posting 79.220 with the 12-year-old mare Elegance, and who stayed out in front until the very last pair overtook her. On an afternoon of great sport the home crowd had plenty to cheer about with five Spanish starters and two of them finishing in the top three when Juan Matute Guimon steered the 15-year-old gelding, Quantico, into third place.

Ferrer-Salat is a five-time Olympian and six-time national champion, and with the 12-year-old Elegance was a member of the Spanish team at this summer’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Putting her strong score on the board as the action got underway today, she could then sit back and let the rest try to better it.

Compatriot Juan Matute Guimon was the first to come really close when scoring 78.160 with his 15-year-old gelding who put on a lovely show without ever looking under any pressure when third-last to go. The quality of the horse’s one-tempi changes down the centreline were a joy to watch as was the athlete’s smile as he cruised to a great finish in piaffe/passage. At just 24 years old the highly popular and super-talented Matute Guimon is already a legend, making a remarkable recovery from a brain bleed in May 2020 to bounce back to the very top of the game.

Grand Prix

Second-last into the ring was Germany’s Frederic Wandres who won yesterday’s Short Grand Prix with Bluetooth OLD, but their mark of 77.230 would only be good enough for fourth spot today when Langehanenberg and the extravagant mover Annabelle soared out in front with a score of 80.500.

Annabelle’s reach in the lateral movements is extraordinary, and today she showed moments of real flamboyance. But for her rider it is always a case of getting the balance right in order to maintain control and to keep her confidence.

"When she was young she was a real mare - when you touched her there wasn’t a centimetre between too much and not enough, it was so difficult to find the perfect aids for her but I’m so happy with what we have reached now."

Helen Langehanenberg (GER)

"It’s still only the beginning, I feel there is so much more we can do if she allows me to support her.  The more she does the more relaxed she becomes. She always has enough expression but she doesn’t always have enough relaxation but routine will bring relaxation so I’m working on that. She’s easy to train, but she almost tries to be too perfect!”, Langehanenberg explained.

Retirement

Runner-up, Ferrer-Salat, couldn’t attend the post-competition press conference because she was busy with a retirement ceremony for her great old campaigner, the 20-year-old Delgado. Third-placed Matute Guimon meanwhile was proud and honoured to be in the prizegiving ceremony with his compatriot, and with today’s winner Langehanenberg.

“It’s such a cool feeling after my comeback in Lyon”, he said, referring to his eighth-place finish at the French fixture that hosted the second leg of the 2021/2022 Western European League four weeks ago. Until making such a successful return to the series he had been intending to head for the Winter Equestrian Festival circuit in Wellington, USA in January, but now he may change his plans. “I might join Helen in Amsterdam (NED) or Den Bosch (NED) instead!”, he said tonight.

He’s delighted to be back in partnership with Quantico. “When I got back to the barn the first time after my accident he looked at me as if to say ‘is that really you?’ He is such a special horse, not the easiest but such a nice horse and we have a unique bond - we are two hearts together!”, the young Spanish star said.

Final

Tonight’s result leaves him lying tenth on the Western European League leaderboard from which the top nine will make the cut to the series Final in Leipzig, Germany next April. Today’s win sees Langehanenberg move into fifth spot when adding the maximum 20 points to the 13 she collected for fourth place at the opening round in Herning, Denmark last month. However it is Wandres who continues to head the standings going into the next round in London (GBR) in three weeks time.

For German athletes getting to the Final is a really tough task because so many of them are vying for places and only three per country are permitted to compete. As Langehanenberg explained today, “Isabel (Werth, defending champion) is going anyway and Jessica (von Bredow-Werndl) will try as well - and if she goes with Dalera then nobody can beat her! Frederic (Wandres) has good points already and he will try to qualify too, but we will for sure try out best and we will see if we can make it!”

The Western European League action will resume at the London International Horse Show, with the Short Grand Prix taking place on Thursday 16 December followed by the points-deciding Freestyle on Friday 17 December.

Münster: The first two licensing days of the Westphalian Main Licensing 2021 are over. The focus of these days was on the dressage stallions. 35 stallions from the overall high-quality licensing lot were approved, 14 were awarded a premium title.

As a prelude, the 53 promising licensing candidates presented themselves to the licensing commission and the expert audience on the triangular track. This was followed by the presentation of the stallions on the lunge. On the second day, the event started with free running. The presented stallions of the 2019 vintage convinced the five-member licensing commission with their consistently good quality during the various presentations: "There hasn't been a vintage with a quality density at the top like this one for a long time," summarised breeding director Thomas Münch.

The champion stallion with the head number 13 was the most pleasing of the high quality selection lot: This stallion is a son of Escolar NRW out of a dam by Apache. The dam of this stallion is none other than the State Premium mare Aweih - daughter of the successful mare Weihegold.  He is bred and owned by Bettina Hinnemann from Voerde. In addition to numerous licensed stallions, the dam line also includes sport horses that have been successful in dressage up to advanced level. Particularly noteworthy is Weihegold, granddam of the Champion Stallion, who was successful in international dressage competitions under the saddle of Isabell Werth. Among other things, the pair became team Olympic champions in Rio de Janeiro. The winning stallion was convincing in all areas: Already on the first day of licensing at the triangle, he presented his three outstanding basic gaits. On the lunge the stallion always convinced with his looseness and best working attitude. "Impression, freedom of shoulder and type of the stallion leave nothing to be desired", was Thomas Münch's conclusion.

Münster: Following the award ceremony for the dressage stallions, the first part of the stallion sales 2021 was held in Westphalia. In an OnLive auction, the visitors celebrated the stallions in Münster- Handorf. 30 of the 32 offers found a new owner under the hammer of Thomas Münch. A son of Vitalis/Fidertanz was sold for the top price of 940,000 Euros. In total, 3.6 million Euros were turned over.

The stallion sales of the dressage stallions took place in the well-filled auction arena in Münster- Handorf this evening with great atmosphere. In the form of an OnLive auction, licensed, premium and non-licensed stallions were on offer. The award-winning final ring participants kicked-off the auction. The very first stallion in the auction lot caused quite a stir. In an exciting bidding duel that almost reached the million mark, the winning bid alternated between customers on site and online. The Vitalis/Fidertanz son with the head number 53 (breeder and exhibitor: ZG Werth, Moers), who had already impressed in his performances at the triangle and on the lunge, changed hands to Helgstrand Dressage ApS for an incredible price of 940,000 Euros. With a kncokdown price of 410,000 Euros, the final ring stallion with the head number 28 by Franklin/Rock Forever (breeder: Hendrik Schulte-Märter, Soest; exhibitor: Blue Moon Sporthorses, Kissenbrück) placed second in the price structure. All eight premium stallions on offer changed hands at six-figure prices. Together they achieved a turnover of 2.4 million Euros.

Two of the licensed non-premium stallions were worth 150,000 Euros to their new owners. One of them was the Quaside MD/Captain Fire son with the head number 43 (breeder: Sascha Hahn, Bramsche; exhibitor: BG IB Berger/Gestüt Allerhop, Sulzbach-Rosenberg). The interestingly coloured bucksin did not only catch the eye of the visitors with his unique colour. He also convinced the audience with his movement. As the second to last approved stallion for sale, the Vitalis/Florestan son (breeder: Jutta Kelle, Minden; exhibitor: IB Berger GmbH, Sulzbach-Rosenberg) with the head number 54 once again aroused high desires. This impressive bay was also sold at the knockdown price of 150,000 Euros. The sold licensed, non premium stallions turned over a total of 905,000 Euros. On average, the stallion owners invested 69,615 Euros.

The audience in the hall and in front of the screens had to wait until the end of the auction for the most expensive non-licensed stallion. Even though the hall was a little empty after almost four hours of the auction, the atmosphere was not dampened! The non-approved stallions were also celebrated by the expert Westphalian audience. Bred and exhibited by FUN Dressage GbR, Bad Homburg, the son of Sezuan/Belissimo M with the head number 48 came up trumps once again. After a lengthy bidding duel, the winning bid was 56,000 Euros in favour of customers in the hall.

All in all, the Westphalian Stallion sales for dressage stallions was a fantastic success. Auctioneer Thomas Münch successfully knocked down 30 of the 32 stallions on offer to new owners. The total turnover of all stallions sold amounted to 3.6 million Euros. An average of 157,714 Euros had to be invested in a licensed stallion. The nine non-licensed stallions cost an average of 33,611 Euros. Almost one third of the stallions were sold to customers who bid online. 13 of the stallions will be used abroad in the future. "We are pleased that our OnLive auction of dressage stallions was so well received. This stallion sales was a perfect start! We are looking forward to the next two licensing days and the stallion sales of the jumping stallions on Wednesday evening," sums up auctioneer Thomas Münch.
