FEI PRESS RELEASE - Tree planting demonstrates World Championship commitment to sustainability

Tree planting demonstrates World Championship commitment to sustainability

The first of 60,000 trees have been planted in the FEI World Championships Forest in Herning (DEN), as the city prepares to host the largest equestrian event ever on Danish soil.

Working closely with the local municipality, the Organising Committee of Herning2022 has created a number of green initiatives, including the planting of a forest on the outskirts of the city.

The sustainability goal of the Organising Committee is straightforward: for the World Championships to make a lasting contribution to the environment, while inspiring everyone involved to take greater responsibility for our planet.

“Forests have a significant positive environmental impact as they are habitats for animals, insects, and plants, and they capture and store atmospheric carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as the trees grow,” Herning2022 CEO of Sport Jens Trabjerg said.

“As every equestrian knows, conserving the environment is necessary for the continued practice of our sport. We want to show that major international sporting events like these World Championships, can make a positive difference.”

“Through our collaboration with Sport Event Denmark, we hope that other organisers and everyone involved in the organisation of such events will start to adopt a similar approach, and perhaps even our principles, as they carry out their work. The World Championship-Forest will be a lasting heritage for everyone who wants to come by and enjoy the many diverse forest experiences that this unique area will offer.”

A total of 60,000 trees will be planted in collaboration with the Growing Trees Network, a self-governing institution that grows new forests both in Denmark and abroad, with the help of public donations. Calculations show that the FEI World Championships Forest will sequester (capture and store) approximately 12,000 tons of CO2 over the next century.

The ECCO FEI World Championships Herning 2022 is set to host around 200,000 spectators and over 1,000 media representatives from 6 to 14 August 2022. It is estimated that approximately 200 million TV viewers will tune in to watch the Jumping, Dressage, Vaulting and Para Dressage competitions.

In addition to the FEI World Championships Forest, the Organising Committee will focus on reusing materials that will be rented where possible, and local riding facilities will receive equipment at the end of the Championships. The judges' towers will be made of recycled wood and will also be used for many years in other equestrian facilities. Foliage around these installations will be re-planted in the forest as much as possible at the end of event.

The Organisers have also created ‘Solution Square’, which is an area at the venue dedicated to Danish environmental technology and circular economy initiatives.

“Sustainability is about building long‑term value and sport events like the ECCO FEI World Championships in Herning are well placed to create a lasting legacy, not just for equestrian sport but also the local community,” FEI Secretary General Sabrina Ibáñez said.

“A change in mindset and attitude is necessary if we are to promote sustainable lifestyles, communities and technologies. And as Herning2022 is showing, the move from small, incremental steps to a bolder strategy for environmental sustainability helps to provide avenues for collaboration and development among local, regional and national stakeholders.

“The FEI World Championships Forest will be a beautiful legacy for the people of Herning, and will serve as a reminder of what can happen when all parties are willing to come together and work towards a common future.”

With environmental sustainability a priority for the FEI, the international governing body has worked towards the implementation of equestrian-specific reporting indexes and the creation of a comprehensive guide book for event organisers world-wide.

The FEI Sustainability Handbook for Event Organisers encourages event organisers to implement sustainability initiatives that help reduce the negative environmental impact of their events and create a positive social and economic legacy.

The FEI is also a signatory of the United Nations Climate Change Sports for Climate Action Framework which calls for parties to “undertake systematic efforts to promote greater environmental responsibility”.

In addition, the FEI has adopted a number of sustainability initiatives at its Headquarters in the Olympic Capital of Lausanne (SUI). The FEI head office is recognised as a "Minergie" certified building, a Swiss standard indicating low energy use, with a reduced energy consumption of 25 per cent. When the Headquarters were refurbished in 2011, only two per cent of renovated buildings in Switzerland met these standards. Increased recycling and staff training have also featured in the FEI's Green Office project.

VIDEOS - Danish combinations took the podium for today´s CDI3* Grand Prix at Hagen

With a starter field of 40 combinations today´s top 3 were pure Danish.

Helgstrand showed his two 8 year old horses in order to obtain their final qualification for World Championships in Herning, likewise Daniel Bachmann Andersen and 10 year old Zippo M.I. also went for their final qualification for Herning.

Daniel is of course already qualified with Marshall-Ball and will be his first choice for the Championships.

Lots of qualities for all 3 Danish combinations

For the two young ones you can of course still see that they are lacking some more strength for the demanding Grand Prix. For Wendy the passage becomes somewhat swinging, while the piaffe still need a bit more clear coordination of the beat front and hind, and her one time changes missing bit bigger jump and through from behind. For both the pirouettes and the piaffe tours Jovian drops his neck and becomes clearly behind the vertical. The picture of two super talented very young Grand Prix horses.

10 year old Zippo M.I. look bodywise just more ready for the task, and you get the feeling that Daniel is able to adjust and ask for more during their performance.

Both judge at C - Ulrike Nivelle GER and judge at M - Dr. Jean-Michel Roudier FRA saw Daniel as today´s winner.

H2R running comments during the tests:

Jovian / Andreas Helgstrand - Good halt, tense hind out into trot, power balanced diagonal, good swing and balance for half passes, good halt with rein back, power diagonal, good into passage, big passage going into small active piaffe, dropping bit hind vertical for piaffe, good transitions, good walk tour, tiny tension into passage, becomes high hind for piaffe and hind vertical, good activity, good into canter, good 2 times, power extended canter, good change, tense bit unbalanced zigzag, ok 1 times swinging, huge sit for pirouette need to be more up and open in front, power diagonal, good passage, good activity piaffe but hind vertical, good transitions.

Queenparks Wendy / Andreas Helgstrand - Open halt hind, power diagonal, good crossing half passes, good halt tense rein back, power diagonal, could be a be sharper into passage, good passage, nice piaffe with good transitions, super extended walk with good relaxation, good collected walk, nice into passage, few piaffe steps forward trending, good flow, good into canter, good 2 times, power risk extended canter, small flying change, good zigzag, small hind 1 times, big 1st pirouette, 2nd need more clear sit, good into trot, good diagonal, good final centerline, bit swing front legs for passage, open halt.

Zippo M.I. / Daniel Bachmann Andersen - Good halt, well balanced diagonal with good power, nice side picture, supple half passes uphill with good crossing, good halt bit tense rein back, nice diagonal, supple into passage, good piaffe could be a bit quicker of the ground, smooth transitions, good relaxation for extended walk, good collected walk nice active, good into passage, nice balance for 2nd piaffe, good transitions, bit tense into canter, good 2 times over full diagonal, power extended canter, super change, super zigzag, good 1 times, very nice sit and balance for 1st pirouette, 2nd bit bigger, good into trot, nice diagonal, good passage, easy into piaffe, good piaffe at the spot and good transition out.

VIDEO - Dorothee Schneider and Showtime FRH German Champions Grand Prix Special 2022

Very happy Champion

Balve is the first competition since Tokyo for Showtime FRH, and as Dorothee said for the subsequent interview, Showtime is definitely her “heart horse”, recently he joined her as training horse for the event at Munich, and he was ready for the audience as Dorothee describes him.

Today they showed a clear winner performance without any technical issues, better half passes and clearly better pirouettes. Lots of expression for the extension, still lacking bit more clear rhythm and activity for the piaffe tours. 83,686%

Silver for Frederic Wandres with Duke of Britain showing a strong performance without any errors. 79,981%

At a very unfamiliar bronze position was Isabell Werth with Quantas. Today with error for both two times and also for the 15 one time times, the extended walk tour with very nice marks 6,5 - 6,5 - 7,0 - 6,0 - 6.5, and overall Quantas did not look really comfortable in the contact and also showed some tensions in the body. 78,216%

Hot scoreboard for German Championships

It is Championship year

The Germans are always very good making attention about their strength before a big championship and this year without exception.

No doubt Dorothee Schneider and Showtime were the winners, but scoring +82% was kind of well scored. Showtime looked fit and motivated, but the trot half passes were lacking more bending, like the piaffe tours were missing clear active regular beat of the ground, series were well executed but lacking more ground cover and both canter pirouettes were active but lacking more sit and balance (more like a small volte).

And looking down the top of the scoreboard the scores were really hot.

Today at 10.20 is Grand Prix Special. (Live at Clipmyhorse)

Focusing on next big challenge for the Danish combinations

Marshall-Bell & Daniel Bachmann Andersen at European Championship 2021 - Photo credit: H2R

Final preparations before World Championships

With a successful national championship weekend with great performances from the Danish combinations, and yesterdays “Danish dressage news of the year” with Marshall-Bell and Daniel Bachmann Andersen being back together getting ready for the World Championships on home soil in August, everyone are “back in saddle” ready for some serious top sport.

Danish federation sports manager Anne-Mette Binder is of course also excited about the news having Marshall-Bell back campaigning for the upcoming Championships, and is very pleased about the qualities of the “long list” for Herning.

Next up Aachen

For the Danish combinations Aachen is part of the final preparations towards the Championships.

This year Denmark will of course be part of CDIO5* team competition in Aachen with 4 combinations, and for the CDI4* Denmark also will show 4 combinations.

The Olympic combination Blue Hors Zack and Nanna Merrald

Blue Hors Zack has not been shown since the Tokyo Olympics, and from H2R point of view the brilliant performances winning the silver medal at the national championships, makes them a clear “hidden card” for the team. It looks like Nanna and Zack doesn´t have to show him anymore before the Championships, as their management and training was just spot on for the national this weekend.

CDIO5* team competition (3 days)

When it comes to Aachen and getting that close to the Championships on home soil in Herning, it´s about bringing the right combinations into the right positions, and still being able to let them shine and prove that they will be the “chosen ones” to represent Denmark for the World Championships.

Which combinations in which competitions

Competing at CDIO5* you obviously need to be qualified. Looking down the list of possible combinations H2R made a pre-list:

  • Vamos Amigos & Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour

  • Marshall-Bell & Daniel Bachmann Andersen

  • Atterupgaards Orthilia & Nanna Merrald

  • Thranegaardens Rostov & Lone Bang

CDI4* individual competition (2 days)

For 4* competition Denmark has 4 spots this year.

Right now both Bohemian and Heiline´s Danciera are confirmed to participate in CDI4*, and for the two next slots Anna Kasprzak with Addict de Massa and Andreas Helgstrand with Jovian or Queenparks Wendy are on H2R list.

  • Bohemian & Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour

  • Heiline´s Danciera & Carina Cassøe Krüth

  • Addict de Massa & Anna Kasprzak

  • Jovian or Queenparks Wendy & Andreas Helgstrand (both 8 year old horses going for their 2nd qualifier in Hagen next week)

According to Anne-Mette Binder head of selection for the Danish team, the official lists for Aachen will be published by Danish national federation Monday.

Sovereign, strong and surprise - Danish national Championships 2022

Three ladies with lots of experience at the podium

Danish national championships 2022 became in many ways predictable when speaking about the sovereignty Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour and Vamos Amigos showed over the last two days. They came to the championships as big favorites, and they showed why they recently went directly at the podium for the World Cup final. They show the dressage in a way we all admire. Lightness, power, quality and control all in one package. The overall picture has improved significantly as Cathrine now manage to show Vamos in a super nice frame all the way, and from the “side line” you get the feeling that she is able to let go from first step, as they trust each other 100% in the arena.

Yesterday with a very strong Grand Prix with two technical errors, but still so much improvement and a picture of “less is more” which is positively reflected at the scoreboard. Today with a highly motivated Vamos from the beginning, but as the test progresses he just seems enjoy the mood together with Cathrine and they shine to the final halt.

Silver medal for 18 year old Blue Hors Zack with Nanna Merrald

Nanna also came into the championships as favorites for the silver position. When talking about an 18 year old international dressage horse it´s pretty much like a horse been “at the war”, but said that Zack was really shining, looked motivated and not least very fit and supple - big complement to Nanna and her team showing Zack in both tests with super strong performances.

Lone Bang Larsen and Thranegaardens Rostov this years fighter surprise bronze medal

Lone and Rostov came from 6th position in the Grand Prix moving up to the podium with the bronze medal. The Grand Prix yesterday with some tensions, while they well deserved danced into the bronze position today. Lone was able to show Rostov without any mistakes today, and when they have the go and flow, their freestyle is just a pleasure to watch combined with very nice choice of music with a pretty high degree of difficulty.

This was for sure the reward but also bit of a surprise for Lone and Rostov. They have been very active at the international circuit lately and gained a lit of valuable experience. They just moved one step closer to the team for the World Championships in August, and now secured their ticket for the CDIO5 team competition in Aachen this year.

Super performances

Anna Kasprzak and Addict de Massa showed their best performances ever. Less tensions and much better flow and relaxation in the body - both days placed 4th.

Anna Zibrandtsen showed two horses Quel Filou OLD with whom she recently made her national Grand Prix debut. Quel Filou brings the full package and they make such a beautiful couple the arena. Anna also brought Detroit for the championships and he looked both fit and motivated. Anna was placed 6 and 7 in the Grand Prix and rode Detroit in todays freestyle where they finished at 6th position.

Joachim Thomsen also brought two horses for the championships Aarøe´s Ghandi and Vichy Pax. Joachim showed good performances with both horses and finished 12 and 13 in the Grand Prix. Today’s freestyle with Ghandi where they showed a really well performed test with confidence and power and finishing as no 9, while Joachim also won the Grand Prix Special consolation together with Vichy Pax.

Impressions from the first day at Danish Warmblood Young Horse selection for WCYH in Ermelo

7 year old Danish Warmblood stallion Highfive Fuglsang by Grand Galaxy Win / De Niro

5 year old with strong group, 6 year old some difficulties with flying changes, and 7 year old with very well educated horses

5 year old candidates

Among the 5 year old the strongest candidates look like Søbakkehus Maude by Hesselhøj Donkey Boy / Wilkens with Allan Grøn (winner of Danish Warmblood Young Horse Championship back in March), test wise still a bit green, but definitely a top candidate and the beautiful harmonious combination Victoria Vallentin with Lyngbjergs St. Paris by Blue Hors St. Schufro / Blue Hors Rockefeller, light-footed super balance with top qualities.

Ghandi SS by Grand Galaxy / Florencio with Merita Hagren super nice for the trot and canter, but missing bit more quality for the walk, they were “eliminated” due to blood in the mouth, but will be allowed to show again tomorrow. Springborgs Abiza by Asgard´s Ibiza / Rubin Royal with Kathrine Springborg shows really nice overall qualities for all three gaits, like also Sandbæks Rio De Chanel by Revolution / Fürstenball with Mette Riisager look like a candidate for the long list.

6 year old candidates

6 year old is always difficult, but said that Hesselhøj Down Town by Hesselhøj Donkey Boy / Blue Hors Zack with Jeanna Högberg look like clear re-election although he refused to do the 2nd flying change and was spinning before Jeanna managed to show it. Subsequent they showed it without any problems.

Skovdals Dexter by Hesselhøj Donkey Boy / Blue Hors Romanov with Susanne Barnow shows three nice basic gaits, good frame and balance, and clear flying changes with just some minor tensions. Polka Fascination M by Fürstenball / Sandro Hit with Dennis Kjær shows very nice trot and walk, canter is lacking bit more overall quality and some tensions for flying changes, Hesselhøj Dream by Hesselhøj Donkey Boy / Tailormade Lancelot with Jan Møller Christensen, effortless test but still missing more a bit more muscles and round topline. Hussmanns Topgun by Totilas / Belissimo M with Moises Azura with a nice presentation, still lacking more security for the flying changes.

7 year old candidates

Super overall quality for the 7 year old horses today.

Highfive Fuglsang by Grand Galaxy Win / De Niro with Anders Hoeck look like a medal for the Championships. Super well balanced, top qualities all the way with three supple quality gaits.

EVO Schubidoo by Blue Hors St. Schufro / Blue Hors Hotline with Anne Marie Hosbond, nice balance and effortless test with good qualites, like also Logo´s Gaya with Emma Ahlberg, Nice Melody with Karoline Rohmann, Peggy Sue Nexen with Søren Wind and Pilegårdens Dreamer with Eric Guardia Martinez look like clear candidates for the long list.
