4 x 10 for new World Champion today

Never ever before has the quality of the 5 year old field been that high. Before going in to this final there were at least 8 candidates for the just 3 spots at the podium. Once again the qualities of the horses from Helgstrand Dressage made the head lines, and Helgstrand himself in the saddle always goes for the medals.

“I knew I had to give my absolute best”

“This year it was a really tough competition with so many good horses and riders. Already before the championships has started I knew that the field would be strong, and all horses looked very sharp for the preliminary test Thursday. I only had one way to beat Secret today and that was to give my best together with Jovian, and I knew we had a bit more in the bag for today if everything succeeded. I’m very happy and pleased about my medals for both Jovian and Queenparks Wendy, and very proud of our runner up as 4th for Valverde with Eva Möller, 5th for Springbank II VH with Severo Jurado Lopez and 11th for Espe with Eva Möller”, told Andreas Helgstrand.

Secret and Jessica Lynn Thomas came, saw and nearly conquered - only beaten with 0,02 points - that like a victory.

The Sezuan imprint for this 5 year old class was underlined with two medals for his offsprings. Both Sezuan offsprings shows strong basic paces, huge rideability, top expression and high quality for the future.

The bronze medal was won by Danish Warmblood gold medal mare Queenparks Wendy - this girl just want to work and please her rider all the way.

Strong performances from experienced riders Dorothee Schneider and Adelinde Cornelissen

At first sight Sisters Act with Dorothee Schneider does not look as something special, but this mare is just a proper future Grand Prix horse in the making. The way she is moving, the lightness and the obedience looks like the right combination for the future.

Sisters Act 🇩🇪 / Dorothee Schneider - very light footed trot tour, super collected walk, good extended walk, supple half passes, the quality of the canter is a bit tense, lost balance into 1st pirouette, good half pass and good change, lack bit more clear canter in the pirouette, good half pass with nice change, extended canter lack bit more volume and airtime, good halt.

sis.png

For the third time in a row Gelder stallion Henkie and Adelinde Cornelissen made it direct to the final. Over all very polished picture in great harmony.

Henkie 🇳🇱 Adelinde Cornelissen - nice halt, well balance and controlled trot tour, collected walk need more collection, super extended walk, super transition at C for canter, nice medium canter, super balanced 1st pirouette, change after half pass late, nice 4 times, lack bit balance 2nd pirouette, nice half pass with good change, good diagonal, good halt.

h.png

Both Danish combinations will go to the small final tomorrow

Ryvangs Damon Dione 🇩🇰 Julie Dyrgaard - expressive nice balanced trot tour, good walk tour with nice relaxation for extended walk, need bit more relaxation for the pirouette, error change after 1st half pass, error final change for 4 times, bit 2nd pirouette, lack more balance and carriage, ok 2nd change at centerline, bit tense halt. (placed 21)

dd.png

Vestervangs Garson 🇩🇰 Emma Ahlberg - very expressive trot, bouncy, good walk lack bit more over track for extended walk, good collection for 1st pirouette becomes bit big, good half pass, bit swing change, error begin of 4 times, becomes bit side wards for 2nd pirouette, swinging towards change at centerline, bit conservative extended canter, open unbalanced halt. Danish Jan Christensen and Hesselhøj Donkey Boy are back in Ermelo going for the podium

“I entered the arena knowing my horse and his qualities, but from there you really never know what happens. I knew that we were on good form, as Donkey Boy has developed very nicely over the last year, and I didn't feel any kind of technical issues entering this 7 year old quite demanding level”, told a very happy and humble Jan Christensen after his super ride with 10 for both walk and perspective, placing him 2nd right behind D´avie and Severo Jurado Lopez.

Hesselhøj Donkey Boy 🇩🇰 Jan Møller Christensen - power trot tour, supple swinging over the back, the collected walk lack bit more collection, superb extended walk, nice 1st pirouette with good change, loosing a bit the collection on the short side, super big 4 times, good half passes and change on centerline, small lost of balance out of 2nd pirouette, very nice extended canter, nice halt.

Matchball OLD with Stefanie Wolf - photo credit: H2R

Matchball OLD with Stefanie Wolf - photo credit: H2R

One to watch for the second part today was Stefanie Wolf. She is always bringing her horses very well prepared and showing them effortless at their level.

From the selection Matchball OLD was one of the German horses that stood out and he did not disappoint today. Stefanie is showing her horses in a very classic way. Balanced and expressive, and even though Matchball is not with the most expressive neck he is presented in a nice frame and contact all the way.

Matchball OLD 🇩🇪 Stefanie Wolf - very controlled and balanced trot tour, very marked and correct collected walk, nice extended walk small issue into canter instead of trot, active canter pirouette, active 4 times with big changes, superb quality of pirouette to right, very nice half passes with lovely bend and good change at the centerline, good extended canter. Very nice presentation.

The stallions dominates

Severo and D´avie is going for the Gold again this year, but not without hard competition.

In the first part Total Hope OLD with Isabel Freese showed that breeding is not a coincidence. The combination of Totilas and Weihegold OLD makes a very attractive horse for both sport and breeding.

The two stallions are very different in types and way of moving and both with top marks and top performances.

D´avie 🇩🇪 / Severo Jurado Lopez - like a cat for the trot tour, bit tension for collected walk, good extended walk, superb frame, good transition at C, huge sit for 1st pirouette, super change, nice half pass small swing before change, error - take self last change for 4 times, good pirouette, nice half pass and change at centerline, good extended canter, bit open halt.

davie.png

Total Hope OLD 🇩🇪 Isabel Freese - lovely swinging trot tour with super balance, collected walk becomes a bit quick, small disturb end of walk tour, good transition to canter, lots of sit of pirouette, super 4 times, 2nd pirouette lack bit balance, super nice half passes with change at centerline, super extended canter, nice halt.

th.png

Super solid performances from Danish riders

Betina Jæger is at start for Germany with Bonderman, and delivered a very solid performance with super control and balance all the way.

Bonderman 🇩🇪 / Betina Jæger - very controlled and balanced trot tour, good quality of the walk tour, good transition to canter, good 1st pirouette nice balance, super half pass and straight change, last change for 4 times with parallel hind, good quality pirouette, super half pass and change on centerline, good diagonal, nice halt.

b.png

Anna Zibrandtsen is at start for Denmark representing Danish Warmblood with UNO Don Olympic. A lovely combinations which suits each other so well and makes a beautiful picture, unfortunately the heavy rain and the umbrellas seems to disturb the walk tour today.

UNO Don Olympic 🇩🇰 / Anna Zibrandtsen - nice start, super elastic supple uphill, tense when turning in the walk, looks as if the umbrellas caught the attention, tense walk tour, super nice transition to canter at C, a single parallel jump into first pirouette, nice pirouette, nice half pass and super straight change at centreline, super 4 times uphill with top quality, nice 2nd pirouette, bit conservative extended canter.

Revolution and Helgstrand in top of the class

Of course Andreas knew it was not a walk in the park to get to the top of the class, so he tried his best. Today the flying changes did not succeed as good as expected, but the basic qualities of Revolution are just special.

Revolution 🇩🇪 Andreas Helgstrand - nice halt, supple expressive trot with nice balance, nice half passes showing good bending with nice flow, superb halt for rein back small tension for rein back, good walk tour could search the bridle bit more, superb canter quality, bit slow 1st change but clear, parallel hind for 2nd change, good transition to trot and nice halt.

Danish Warmblood stallion Glock´s Zonik with huge imprint

Impressive 3 sons in top of the field by Glock´s Zonik, all with 3 outstanding gaits, lots of expression and format and all with abilities for the big sport.

Third part of 6 year old qualifier

Imposantos and Feel Free OLD among the top placed

Imposantos with Bart Veeze is imposantos for both trot and walk, but when it comes to the canter, the 3 beat rhythm is just not shown correctly and the forward search is also missing for the entire canter tour.

Imposantos 🇳🇱 / Bart Veeze - good power for the trot tour, bit active mouth, bit unbalanced into half pass to right, good halt with rein back, very good and relaxed walk, lacking a bit more clear beat for the canter, seems a bit hurried, changes ok but lack more expression.

im.png

Feel Free OLD with Bernadette Brune showed a very nice performance. It is a very active and forward going horse and looks eager to please her rider. And from the sideline this horse really looks like a future Grand Prix horse, but just not seen or recognised from the judges with just 8,6!

“Danish” combinations

Ann Christin Wienkamp with Lindballes Just Perfect showed an effortless and nice test with good flow and without any issues.

Lindballes Just Perfect 🇩🇰 / Ann Christin Wienkamp - supple trot tour with good expression, good forward flow, nice frame, bit tense halt with rein back, good supple walk tour, solid canter tour, lack bit more suppleness and expression but showing good flying changes, and a very effortless test.

Lind.png

Straight Horse Ascensione 🇩🇰 / Helen Langehanenberg - expressive power, but bit tense expression from the trot tour, good walk could show bit more over track for extended trot, bit tense canter tour, 2nd change with some tensions, late transition to trot.

s p.png

The scoreboard got very hot

Destacado with Matthias Alexander Rath are very much World Championship darlings, and this fact they proved again today. Super frame and super walk thats for sure correct.

Destacado 🇩🇪 / Matthias Alexander Rath - good flow for trot tour, lack more push from hind, nice frame, super good walk tour through the body, good canter tour but tense 1st change and does not take the aides at first for the 2nd change.

Zonik sons in top of the class

Early start of a busy day starting with 6 year old preliminary qualifier. First to go was Zum Glück RS2 OLD with Robin van Lierop - overall easy and effortless test with quality all the way.

Zum Glück RS2 OLD 🇳🇱 Robin van Lierop - nice flow for the trot tour with good expression, lack bit more power from behind, very nice walk tour with good relaxation and over track, easy and effortless canter tour in a very nice uphill well balanced frame, only small thing was a bit stocked transition to trot at F.

zum g point .png

Danish combinations

Another strong performance from Andreas Helgstrand this time for Denmark, with Danish Warmblood gelding Zhaplin Langholt owned by Charlotte Jorst. The best 6 year old Danish bred horse, and he proved already his top qualities as a 5 year old winning Danish Warmblood Young Horse championship.

“I was very satisfied with our performance today, Zhaplin felt a bit impressed about the surroundings today, but he gives you an incredible feeling and he has so much power - we are hopefully ready for the final”, said Helgstrand after his test.

Zhaplin Langholt 🇩🇰 / Andreas Helgstrand - good halt, nice diagonal, small canter for 1st half circle turn, super expressive trot tour, nice flow and go, 1st half pass bit unbalanced 1st half pass, better half pass to right, power diagonal, super halt small disturb good rein back, bit looking for the walk tour, lacking a bit more contact on the rein for the walk tour, good 1st change, super 2nd change, super quality of the canter tour, good halt.

z p.png

Baunehøjens Carpaccio 🇩🇰 Anette Ejlersgaard - bit big eyes at centerline, good trot tour with good rhythm, bit big eyes along the side of the arena, open halt with tense rein back, walk need more relaxation and over the back need to search the rein more for the extended walk, canter becomes a bit cautious, bit small 1st change, super nice change for right, good transition to trot.

Never seen so many 5 year old top horses for WCYH before

12 best combinations are qualified direct for the final, 3 more combinations to come from small final which will be tomorrow morning at 9.00.

The 3 combinations coming from the small final looks like Espe/Eva Möller, Søgaards Bon Bravour/Camilla Ahlers Pedersen and Eleverhøjs Raccolto/Meike Lang.

This final part of today’s 5 year old qualifier with 4 new horses direct into the final. Valverde, Jovian, Don Vito de Hus and Moosbend´s Rockadera.

Valverde with Eva Möller scored todays 2nd 10 - this time for the walk. Another super presentation from Eva and bringing them into the 2nd place.

Valverde 🇩🇪 / Eva Möller - good trot tour with nice flow in a good frame, small unbalance by transition from extension to collection, good halt with rein back, super relaxation and over track for walk tour, good canter tour with nice simple change, good transition to tror, nice stretching on half circle, nice final halt.

Jovian and Andreas Helgstrand just shows their absolute best today also reflected by top mark 10 for the trot and highest score for submission 9,5.

Jovian 🇳🇱 / Andreas Helgstrand - good halt, smooth trot tour, power balanced trot tour, uphill top balanced extensions, supple serpentines, nice halt with rein back, good walk tour could stretch more over the back with more over track, super transition to walk and canter again, nice transition to trot, nice relaxed half circle. Strong performance.

The field of 5 year old horses has never been as strong as this year, actually top 7 from today all look like candidates for the medals.

Secret and Jessica Lynn Thomas took the lead with impressive 9,54.

Secret 🇩🇪 / Jessica Lynn Thomas - nice halt, bit high tempo, super balance and expression, small canter for 2nd serpentine, bit open halt with bit tense rein back, bit unbalanced huge active walk, good canter tour with nice simple change, good transition to trot, high tempo for half circle.

From H2R point of view the walk is for 8,0 today - huge but some kind of unbalanced.

secret point .png

Two Dutch combinations new in the top

Renate van Uytert-van Vliet with Johnny Deep showed a strong overall test with power and expression and top gaits.

Johnny Deep 🇳🇱 / Renata van Uytert-van Vliet - super nice expressive strong power trot tour, super supple walk tour with nice relaxation and over track, very good canter, becomes bit against the leg for transition simple change, good transition to trot, nice stretching.

johnny.png

Emmelie Scholtens with Johnny Be Goode show a good test, but from H2R point af view the over all impression of the trot tour with a bit to high neck like the canter was good but not quite for 8,8.

Johnny Be Goode 🇳🇱 / Emmelie Scholtens - very nice trot tour with good expression, bit high in the neck, super supple clear and big walk with nice relaxation, good canter, nice simple change, good transition to trot but small canter after, good stretching.

Queenparks Wendy and Jameson RS2 in a special league

Home soil favorite Jameson with Marieke van der Putten did not disappoint the sharp audience, but the big difference between him and Queenparks Wendy was the walk.

Jameson showing a bit limited walk while Queenparks Wendy shows top relaxation through the body walk. Jameson shows extraordinary extensions for both trot and canter, while the collected canter with turns and counter canter lacking a bit more clear rhythm of the ground. Here Wendy becomes a bit hurried for the trot extensions, but super balanced for all the canter work no matter if it is collected or extensions. Both horses were presented in a lovely 100% steady frame.

Queenparks Wendy 🇩🇰 / Andreas Helgstrand - good halt, top motivated active trot tour in good balance, bit hurried extensions, good halt small tensions for rein back, super nice walk tour with good relaxation and nice over track, super well balance canter tour including very nice simple change and nice balance for counter canter, nice stretching for longer reins. Super presentation.A very correct presentation from Dorothee Schneider with Dante´s Hit placed them as overall 4th. Dante´s Hit is well balanced in all three gait, but lacking bit more strength to make the picture more powerful.

Wendy point .png

Jameson RS2 🇳🇱 / Marieke van der Putten - active light footed trot tour, super nice extensions uphill, bit tense halt with rein back, good walk but could show bit more over the back, bit tensions for collected canter, super extensions, nice simple change, good transition to trot, nice stretching for longer reins.

jameson point .png

Dante´s Hit 🇩🇪 / Dorothee Schneider - good trot tour nice balance, lack bit more push for extensions, tense halt with rein back, today's best walk tour so far, good canter tour lack bit more over all power, but very correct presentation.

First part of 5 year old qualifier

Espe and Eva Möller - photo credit: Lily Forado

Espe and Eva Möller - photo credit: Lily Forado

Stefanie Wolf and For Gold in the lead with a super presentation, but with the sharp perspective glasses the hindlegs are just missing more push under the body for all gaits.

A clear medal horse is Espe with Eva Möller and it seems very harsh with 6,5 for the walk, as the walk itself is with super quality and rhythm, but yes not 100% relaxed but not for just 6,5! From H2R point of view this must be reflected by the submission where they correctly were scored with 7,8.

Espe 🇩🇪 / Eva Möller - light-footed power trot, bit high tempo, super balance, good halt with rein back, tense start walk but active good power walk tiny unsteady search for the bit, power canter uphill active, superb transition to walk, super counter canter and transition to trot, super presentation.

Springbank II VH with Severo Jurado Lopez showed a strong test, but for some moment the big stallion lacking a bit more clear self carriage and push from hind, becomes tiny unsteady in the contact.

Springbank II VH 🇸🇪 Severo Jurado Lopez - bit unbalanced halt, lot of power for trot bit unbalanced moments in the contact, super halt with rein back, active walk with good relaxation, super power for canter tour, late transition to trot.

Both Danish horses Eleverhøjs Raccolto with Meike Lang and Skovens Tzarina with Betina Jæger were showing super nice qualities, but lacking more relaxation and suppleness for the walk tours.

Everhøjs Raccolto 🇩🇰DEN (GER) - super nice supple forward trot tour in a nice frame, unfortunately very tense halt with rein back, good rhythm for the walk tour, could show more over track, lovely uphill well balanced canter, super from behind every single stride, simple change to close to the fence becomes unbalanced, nice trot with longer reins in good balance.

Skovens Tzarina 🇩🇰/ Betina Jæger - light and easy trot tour in good balance with nice expression, bit tense halt with rein back, need bit more let go for the walk tour good, good rhythm, good quality in the canter, small tension for simple change.

For both Solo Mio presented for USA by Emily Miles and Hawtins Lirica with British Lucinda Elliot they became a bit unbalanced during their tests. Both horses with super nice qualities but lacking a bit more support from their riders to be able to show their top potential.

FEI Press Release - Gigantic medal haul for Germany at FEI Youth Dressage Championship in San Giovanni

Only a Dutch double stood in the way of a total German whitewash

Team Germany almost completely dominated the FEI Dressage European Championship 2019 for U25, Young Riders, Juniors and Children staged at the fabulous Horses Riviera Resort at San Giovanni in Marignano, near Rimini in Italy (23-28 July).

They claimed nine of the 11 gold medal placings on offer, with only a Dutch double standing in the way of a total German whitewash. High temperatures in the early part of the week were followed by rain on the final day, but nothing could get in the way of sparkling sport filled with great promise for the future in this demanding equestrian discipline.

With its six floodlit arenas, top-class stabling and extensive hospitality areas the venue, which lies on the Adriatic Sea, was something of a paradise for the record number of young athletes from 26 countries who turned up with their support teams, families and friends. As Maria Schierholter Otte, team leader of the German Junior and Young Rider squads said, “it is essential for the teams to be able to compete in all four categories in the same place so, from this point of view, San Giovanni is the ideal solution!”

Juniors

It was triple-gold for Jana Schrödter and her stallion Der Erbe who, along with her German team-mate Anna Middelberg partnering Blickfang, posted the two leading scores on the opening day of the Junior team test last Wednesday. When compatriot Valentina Pistner posted the biggest mark of the entire competition with Flamboyant the following day, then the Junior Team title was in German hands. Henriette Schmidt and Rocky’s Sunshine were the fourth combination in the winning side, and such was the quality of the German performances that her strong score of 74.182 was the discard.

The final leaderboard showed the gold medallists on a team total of 76.081, with The Netherlands’ Pam Verbeek (Fernando Torres), Annemijn Boogaard (Fullspeed TC), Sanne van der Pols (Excellentie) and Marten Luiten (Fynons) in silver medal spot on 73.485. Denmark took the bronze when the average score for Sofie Hansen (Dieu D’Amour 3), Frederikke Gram Jacobsen (Ryvangs Zafina), Maria Mejlgaard jensen (Uno lV) and Sara Aagaard Hyrm was 71.959.

Awarded a massive 77.971, 18-year-old Schrödter then went on to win the Individual title ahead of The Netherlands’ Luiten in silver on a mark of 75.588 and Schrödter’s team-mate Pistner in bronze (74.794). And these three horse-and-rider combinations remained on precisely the same steps of the podium when the Freestyle medals were awarded on Sunday. It was an extraordinary series of results for the new triple champion who was originally a reserve for her team but who was called into action at the last moment to substitute for Lucie-Anouk Baumgurtel.

A total of 78 athletes and teams from 19 countries contested the Junior medals.

Young Riders

The Netherlands’ Daphne van Peperstraten and Greenpoint’s Cupido topped the Young Riders team scoreboard with a mark of 74.265 after the first day, but Germany’s Semmieke Rothenberger demoted her to runner-up spot when the second tranche took their turn the following day and, like her Junior squad-mate, went on to score a hat-trick of victories.

Rothenberger’s strong score of 77.559 with Dissertation was backed up by Paulina Holzknecht (Wells Fargo), Alexa Westendorp (Four Seasons) and Lia Welschof (Linus K) to ensure the German average mark of 74.745 for the gold. Once again the Dutch had to settle for silver when Paperstraten, Kimberly Pap (Vloet Victory), Thalia Rockx (Verdi de la Fazenda) and Esme Donkers (Chaina) rounded up their results to an average of 73.030. Sweden’s Linnea Williamson (Tabasco), Elin Mattsson (Beckham), Cecilia Bergakra Berglund (Primavera) an Evelina Doerstrom (Weihenstephaner) claimed team bronze on 69.687.

In the Young Riders Individual, Rothenberger’s impressive mark of 78.941 pinned The Netherlands’ Pap into silver and her German team-mate Welschof into bronze. It was closer in the Freestyle, with just over half a percentage point separating her from team silver medallist Donkers, and the Dutch were particularly strong here, Pap clinching the bronze just ahead of van Paperstraten.

Success is no stranger to Rothenberger whose family are steeped in Dressage history. She already had eight European gold medals in the bag by the end of her career in ponies, highlighted by brilliant partnerships with both the wonderful Golden Girl and the delightful Deinhard B. She won three more at Junior level with Geisha and Dissertation, and although she has claimed two Young Rider golds with Geisha in recent years, she pulled out Dissertation, who helped her become double Junior champion at Oliva (ESP) three years ago, to do the hat-trick this time around.

"It couldn’t have been better - I am particularly proud of these results obtained against very strong opponents. And I really like the system here, this is a perfect place to both train and compete!"

Semmieke Rothenberger (GER)

A total of 57 horse-and-rider combinations battled for the Young Riders medals, and 13 countries were represented in the team competition.

Children

Allegra Schmitz-Morkramer’s big score of 78.385 with Lavissaro led Germany to the Children’s team title. Clara Paschertz (Belvedere), Kenya Schwierking (Dinos Boy) and Lisa Steisslinger (Havanna Negra) helped secure the winning average of 74.667 and The Netherlands’ Maura Knipscheer (Amaretto), Senna Evers (Happy Feet), Lara van Nek (Fariska) and Anniek van Dulst (Isala’s Arielle) took the silver with 73.833. Russia’s Arina Makhileve (Titanie), Stefania Mechetina (San Calida), Yanina Frantsuzova (Flitslampje) and Karina Zakhrabekova (Ein Stern) pushed Team Belgium off the podium for the bronze when putting 69.859 on the board.

And continuing the overwhelming German theme, 13-year-old Schmitz-Morkramer went on to scoop the Children’s Individual title. An impressive score of 78.607 clinched it, and it was Dutch girl Lara van Nek who earned the silver with a great score of 75.786 while Denmark got onto the podium when Annabelle Rehn and Aros A Fenris posted 74.893.

Double-gold medallist Schmitz-Morkramer put in excellent preparation for this year’s Championship with a series of great results at the Olympic test event in Hagen (GER) where she pinned team-mate Steisslinger into second and van Neck into third in the Children’s Individual competition.

A total of 50 competitors and nine teams lined out in this division.

U25

The only category in which the Germans were thrown off-course was in the U25 in which The Netherlands’ Jeanine Nieuwenhuis broke their stranglehold. However even though she posted the top score in the Intermediate ll which decided the team medals, it was Germany who claimed the team title here yet again when Jill-Marielle Becks (Damoris Delorange) finished second, Bianca Nowag (Sir Hohenstein) finished third and Raphael Netz filled fifth place. Fourth member of the gold-medal-winning German side was Ann Kathrin Lindner (Gunfire).

Nieuwenhuis had to settle for team silver along with Dutch team-mates Carlijn Huberts (Watoeshi), Jasmien de Koeyer (Esperanza) and Denise Nekeman (Boston STH), while Denmark’s Nana Gajhede (Overgaards Lowell), Emma Skov (Cracker Jack), Soren Wind (Diego) and Josefine Hoffmann (Hoenerups Driver) stood on the third step of the podium.

But 24-year-old Nieuwenhuis and the 14-year-old TC Athene reigned supreme in both Friday’s Grand Prix and Sunday’s Freestyle, pinning Nekeman into silver and Germany’s Becks into bronze in the former, and Germany’s Nowag into silver and Denmark’s Hoffmann into bronze in the latter. She first stood on a Championship podium when helping claim European Junior team gold in Bern (SUI) in 2012, and with TC Athene also won the Young Rider Individual title at Oliva (ESP) in 2016.

A total of 34 horse-and-rider combinations, and teams from seven nations, lined out in the U25 division.
