FEI Press Release - Will anyone challenge the German Dressage giants?

The undisputed Queen of international Dressage, Isabell Werth, headlines the stellar German side who go into next week's Longines FEI European Dressage Championships as defending champions. (FEI/Liz Gregg)

And who will claim the Olympic qualifying spots?

By Louise Parkes

When the Longines FEI European Dressage Championships 2019 get underway in Rotterdam, The Netherlands next Monday (19 August) the biggest question will be whether athletes from any other nation can seriously challenge the mighty Germans.

There may have been brief lapses in their domination of the team gold medal leaderboard - the Dutch coming out on top in 2007, 2009 and again in 2015, and Great Britain victorious in 2011 - but in the 56-year-history of this event that takes place every two years, the German record is phenomenal.

A total of 23 team titles, with the last posted in Gothenburg (SWE) two years ago where team-member Isabell Werth brought her personal European medal collection to a staggering 21 when adding both the individual Grand Prix Special and Freestyle titles

In total Germany has scooped 18 individual golds, their nearest rivals from The Netherlands taking seven while Switzerland and Great Britain have four apiece and Austria, Denmark and France each have one. The record books show 24 female individual champions and a relatively modest eight male individual title-holders, the latter including the great Reiner Klimke from Germany who reigned supreme with Dux in 1967, with Mehmed in 1963 and with Ahlerich in 1985.

The most recent male champion was The Netherlands’ Edward Gal whose Freestyle gold-medal-winning performance with the fabulous black stallion, Totilas, at Windsor (GBR) in 2009 was nothing short of unforgettable.

A total of 70 Dressage athletes from 24 countries will contest the medals this time around. And of the 15 participating teams, the biggest challenge to the defending champions from Germany look set to be the British, the Swedes, the Danes and of course their great old rivals, the Dutch.

The British will be hoping to put on a really strong show with the exciting nine-year-old mare Mount St John Freestyle ridden by Charlotte Dujardin who will be joined by Carl Hester with Hawtins Delicato, Gareth Hughes with Classic Briolinca and newcomer Charlotte Fry partnering Dark Legend. Dujardin creates a ripple of excitement wherever she goes and no matter what horse she rides, and the lady who broke multiple world records during her thrilling partnership with the now-retired Valegro showed that her latest ride has huge potential when taking individual bronze in the Grand Prix Special at last year’s FEI World Equestrian Games™ in Tryon, USA.

Sweden sends Patrik Kittel, Therese Nilshagen and sisters Antonia and Juliette Ramel, while Denmark fields Daniel Bachmann Andersen, Anders Dahl, Cathrine Dufour and Agnete Kirk Thinggaard. Edward Gal, Anne Meulendijks, Hans Peter Minderhoud and Emmelie Scholtens will fly the Dutch flag, but it seems the opposition have much to do to keep the German side of Sonke Rothenberger riding Cosmo, Dorothee Schneider with Showtime FRH, Jessica von Bredow-Werndl with TSF Dalera and Werth with her adored Bella Rose in check.

The only change from the gold-medal-winning German team at last year’s WEG is that Schneider has replaced Sammy Davis with Showtime, and this pair are in flying form at present, seriously threatening fellow-countrywoman Werth with great performances at CHIO Aachen (GER) last month.

The team medals will be decided in the Grand Prix which starts on Monday and runs over two days, and the competition for placings all the way down the line will be intense. Because the three best teams not already qualified will earn a place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Chasing those three coveted spots will be Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Luxembourg and Portugal. Japan is qualified as host country while Germany, USA, Great Britain, Sweden, Netherlands, Spain, Russia, Canada, Brazil and Australia have already booked their slots.

The Grand Prix Special title will be decided on Thursday 22nd and the Grand Prix Freestyle will bring the 29th FEI European Dressage Championship to a close on Saturday 24th.

Var niveauet så forskelligt?

IMG_1914.JPG

VIDEO - Grand Prix Special victory for Dorothee Schneider with Faustus in Verden today

Grand Prix Special victory for Dorothee Schneider with Faustus with smaller issues during the test, bit unbalanced transition out of 1st piaffe, small lost of impulsion mid of 2nd piaffe, big 2nd pirouette, bit stocked transition to trot at M, small lack of balance for final extension, final piaffe lack bit more energy. 75,894%

For Marcus Hermes with ZINQ Abegglen FH an error at the end of the 15 one times became costly today. The 2nd pirouette lack a bit balance and control and the final piaffe becomes a bit in two tempi. 75,511%

3rd today was 10 year old KWPN Elastico with Dutch rider Saskia van Es. They recently made their international GP debut at Leudelange, and today they came 3rd with 72,511%. Lot of power expression, but in general a bit to much push riding, but the qualities in general are really nice. During the test Elastico shows some tensions but Saskia manage to keep the flow in a good way.

Kristine Møller dominates in both small tour and medium tour at CDI Crozet FRA

Danish Kristine Møller riding for Luxembourg most successful rider in Crozet this weekend

It was the second year Kristine Møller and her team went to Crozet in France, and it was not only a huge success at the competitions, but the entire organisation and setup is just outstanding, and for sure an event for next years schedule again, tells a very happy Kristine Møller.

Five times winner this weekend

Two times at top of the podium Friday, Intermédiaire A victory with Hamilton with 69.882% and Prix Sct Georg victory with Standing O´vation with 71,029%.

Saturday just one day at top of the podium with Standing O´vation in Intermediaire I with 71,941%.

Then again twice at the top of the podium Sunday with Intermediaire I freestyle together with Standing O´vation with 73,950%, and later in Intermediaire II with Hamilton with 70,735%.

Nürnberger Burg-Pokal qualifier in Verden today for Hubertus Schmidt with 7 year old Denoix

Nurnberger.png

It became a close race in the top today not for Hubertus Schmidt himself as yesterday with top placements for both Denoix and Goldberg, but today Lena Waldmann with Oldenburger stallion Morricone by Millennium / Rubin Royal were pretty close, (from the sideline closer than the scoreboard) with just 2% difference.

Another strong performance from Hubertus Schmidt with Denoix by Destano today. The big stallion has already developed very well throughout this season, and is getting both more strength and experience for the test.

Denoix / Hubertus Schmidt - super presentation with a supple trot tour, with nice expression, super walk tour with nice walk pirouettes, super strong canter tour without any technical issues, super halt for rein back, bit tense rein back with power extension towards halt. 76,951%.

Morricone / Lena Waldmann - super nice overall picture easy and obedient test in a nice natural closed frame, very much to like with super suppleness. Looks like a super rideable high quality stallion also for the future. 75,024%

For both Nicole Wego and Dorothee Schneider it was not their day. Nicole´s horse Budhi got the tongue over the bit and she had to retire, while Dorothee´s Fürst Magic wasn’t that magic today, he started out in canter from the entering halt and more issues crept in during the test, so instead of showing a bad score, Dorothee wisely chose to retire after the final halt.

73,370% Grand Prix victory for ZINQ Abegglen FH and Marcus Hermes today in Verden

Screen%2BShot%2B2019-08-10%2Bat%2B20.29.30.jpg

1st place - Just 9 year young ZINQ Abegglen and getting so much more confident every time. Today fully concentrated in the very windy arena, and showing top qualities all the way with super elasticity and balance, and Marcus is able to ride him in a very light contact all the way and still keeping a lovely collection. From the sideline a clear +75% test today.

2nd place - Dorothee Schneider and Faustus showed a really nice test with highlights for the trot tour with super nice half passes, active piaffe and expressive passage. Good walk tour, an error at the beginning of the one times and bit unbalanced canter pirouettes, the transition to trot at M becomes through a few walk steps.

3rd place - FRH Davinia la Douce with Anabel Balkenhol showed a very nice test. The 12 year old mare by Don Frederico / A Jungle Prince is new at the international level as Balkenhol showed her first time this year at Grand Prix level in Hamburg back in May.

No major technical issues, nice expressive trot tour, good piaffe tours, expressive passage, smaller unbalance going out from the piaffes, good walk, not the biggest walk but nice activity and rhythm, nice canter tour, today with a small error at the end of the two times, and a slightly overturned 2nd pirouette. For sure a very interesting combination to keep an eye on.

The young dressage mares are shown free in arena during the day, and the young showjumpers are loosejumped in the early Sunday morning.

Medal aspirers – the young newly graded top mares

The young mares aspiring for a medal are exclusively mares with a very good riding test and they are selected to go to this Elite Mare Show by the DWB judges at their mare grading in June or August. A small heat of older performance mares with a passed saddle grading as young, can enter for their own medal class, if they have suffiently high performance results. Among the approx. 40 mares in total, a few – normally around 3-5 mares - get a breeders’ gold medal, some get silver and some get bronze. Among these mares some of the mare seen again as representatives of Danish Warmblood at the World Breeding Championships for Young Horses in Ermelo and Zangersheide and competing at advanced level later in their carrier.

Examples of medal mares competing succesfully in Verden or Ermelo are UNO Donna Unique, Polka Hit Nexen, Fiontina, Fiontini, Svalegårds Terra, Straight Horse Ascenzione, Straight Horse Sezuanna, Delizia, Atterupgaards Delorean, Red Diamant, and Heiline’s Danciera, and in Zangersheide Chinett Ask, Fendi Ask, and HipHop Ask.

The small, but very well-jumping heat of showjumper mares are shown loosejumping on Sunday morning and the dressage mares are shown ridden in the early afternoon. Showjumper Mare of the Year and Dressage Mare of the Year are appointed and honoured.

D´avie and Severo Jurado Lopez World Champions for 7 year old

7 year old final with threes strong combinations in top

For the 7 year old final dressage judge Mr. Andrew Gardner was at the microphone with some super explanations and comments after each test. This way of putting on words and describe what the judging team actually found very valuable and also where they’ve made their deductions just make this championships some special and bring the dressage into an even more exciting level.

For D´avie and Severo Mr. Andrew Gardner explained that they were not making any deductions for the canter quality itself even though there were a few minor things, those thing were taken into consideration by the submission mark - therefor a clear 10 for the canter.

D´avie 🇩🇪 super start so much expression and quality, smooth supple turns, giving the rein loosing the suspension a bit, good extended walk, super collected walk with very nice pirouettes, good transition to canter, good zigzag, nice extension, superb pirouettes control and quality, bit tension for series, applauding audience for final centerline.

The highest quality marks of the World Championships

For rider Jan Møller Christensen the higheste quality marks will of course be remembered, but his possible “loss” of the gold medal will take a couple of weeks to overcome, he told H2R after the test.

As Jan told at the subsequent press conference when asked about his development with Donkey Boy from 5th place last year to the silver medal this year. “I think the horse just become stronger from last year. Last year he was good, but of course I can feel he is more ready now and he is stronger. With young horses its important to remember that sometimes they are ready, sometimes they are nearly ready, and sometimes they are really ready”.

Hesselhøj Donkey Boy 🇩🇰 good halt, power diagonal slightly wide hind, easy light trot tour, easy coming back from extension, nice contact, top extended walk for 10, better collected walk than for the preliminary test, good pirouettes, nice zigzag (hind for riders aides?) very nice canter pirouette, lost 1st change at C, goes into trot, good 2nd pirouette, nice 4 times, good 3 times, nice halt, applauding audience for the final meters.

Short partnership with huge success

Only since January 2019 Total Hope and Isabel has been partners, and before going to the German selection for this World Championships they won the Nürnberger Burg-Pokal qualifier in Redefin with impressive 77,293%, so they already proved their qualities at this level. For both the preliminary test and the final test they showed strong performances, and unfortunately the subsequent comments did not mention anything about the collected walk tour, which was something very special, when Isabel was able to show such a good quality after a huge supple extended walk tour, without rhythm issues.

Total Hope OLD and Isabel Freese - photo credit: Lily Forado

Total Hope 🇩🇪 not straight into the halt, super swing for trot, could be a bit more uphill, lovely giving the reins, super nice shoulder in and turns, supple half pass, super extended walk, very good collected walk with good pirouettes, super zigzag really change from behind, superb diagonal, becomes slight hind aides into 1st pirouette, better forward flow 2nd, superb big 4 times, super 3 times nice flow forward, super halt.

Well deserved 10 for canter but for sure a 9,5 for walk today as it was todays best and most correct collected walk!

FEI PRESS RELEASE - Three great finals and three great champions

Screen+Shot+2019-08-05+at+20.18.08.jpg
Screen+Shot+2019-08-05+at+20.18.24.jpg

The KWPN stallion Jovian claimed the 5-Year-Old title, the Oldenburg stallion Zucchero topped the 6-year-Old division and the Hannoverian stallion d’Avie returned from his 2018 triumph to star once again as a 7-Year-Old at the Longines FEI WBFSH Dressage World Breeding Championships for Young Horses in Ermelo (NED) at the weekend. This was the fourth time for the event to be held at the Dutch venue, and next year it will return to Verden in Germany where it was previously staged over a period of 15 years.

It has become a superb testing ground for future champions as horses compete against their peers born in the same year, firstly in a qualifier from which the top 12 qualify directly for the Final while the rest go into a small final from which the top three also make the cut.

5-Year-Olds: An historic number of 10s

Denmark’s Andreas Helgstrand had a glorious weekend when taking gold and bronze in this division. In Saturday’s finale he first competed Queenparks Wendy, a mare by three-time World Breeding Chamionship winner Sezuan, and in a solid test she showed lovely relaxed walk and a canter so uphill it earned a 10 and the temporary lead in the class on a total of 9.42 points.

The sensational breeding stallion Secret, another son of Sezuan, won the qualifier for Sweden’s Jessica Lynn Thomas and was a big audience favourite. But they had to settle for silver when Helgstrand returned to squeeze past them and post the winning score of 9.66 with Jovian. “The trot had so much spring, so much suspension, front and hind matching well”, said judge Maria Schwennesen from Australia.

"We had such a strong group of 5-Year-Olds from our stable that it was hard to say which would do best! I am very happy for my two horses doing clean tests. Jovian has been the easiest horse to ride from the first day he entered our stables. I also want to compliment the jury, and especially their explanatory statement to the audience: critical yet positive, it was perfect!"

Andreas Helgstrand (DEN)

6-Year-Olds: A final with sugar-coating as Zucchero comes out on top

The test for the 6-Year-Old final demands a heightened degree of difficulty, so it sifts out the real potential stars who may well be the Grand Prix horses at the Olympic Games in 2024.

Germany’s Helen Langehanenberg and the Danish Warmblood, Straighthorse Ascenzione, kicked off yesterday morning with a score of 8.94 before The Netherlands’ Bart Veeze and the KWPN stallion Imposantos nearly scored a 10 for walk to total on 9.8. The first to challenge his lead was Helgstrand, this time partnering Zhaplin Langholt which is owned by American Grand Prix rider Charlotte Jorst. The pair were clapped down their final centreline before their mark of 9.34 went up on the leaderboard. And then the Danish rider returned to go even better with his 5-Year-Old champion from last year, Revolution. The arena was hushed as this pair showed superb rhythm and a breath-taking, ground-covering uphill canter, and the trot was rewarded with a 10 for a total final score of 9.44.

However the spectators showed who their favourite was when they cheered Germany’s Frederic Wandres and Zucchero OLD all the way from their final corner to their final halt. “This horse excelled in the flying changes and lateral work, he was the closest to perfection! His future as a dressage horse is bright!” commented the judges after they posted the winning mark of 9.66.

"I have competed here every year, come close twice with fourth place so this is very special! It is a very difficult test, almost a small St Georg and and I knew I had to have the horse really supple and that we must trust each other. I have a strong relationship with Zucchero"

Frederic Wandres (GER)

7-Year-Olds: D’Avie is champion once again

The 7-Year-Olds have to deliver a combination of excellent gaits and precision, with technical scores awarded by two judges along with the conventional five-score assessment of Trot, Walk, Canter, Submission and future Perspective.

If any horse has a stellar pedigree it is Total Hope OLD, a son of Isabell Werth’s super-mare Weihegold OLD and world champion Totilas. An approved stallion ridden by Norway’s Isabel Freese who has been working for Paul Schockemohle in Germany for many years, the black stallion went into the lead on a score of 84.250.

However the pair were overtaken by Denmark’s Jan Moller Christensen and Hesselhoj Donkey Boy who previously took a bronze as a five-year-old. Rewarded a 10 for a huge walk and another for potential, they went out in front when posting 85.02. But last year’s 6-Year-Old champion D’Avie presented a performance that made the audience burst into applause well before the end, and this son of Don Juan de Hus snatched the gold by a whisker when putting 85.107 on the board.

“Of course I felt pressure defending the title, especially when the competition comes so close!” said rider Severo Jurado Lopez, a man who has made something of a habit of great results at these championships down the years.

"My dream is to continue with the education of D’Avie and to keep riding him to the highest level, like I do with Fiontini"

Severo Jurado Lopez (ESP)

explained the Spanish star, referring to the mare with which he won at each level in these Championships and who now looks set for stardom on the big stage.

What top of the final for the 6 year old class today

The 5 year old was really extraordinary top quality. Said that the top of the 6 year old class really showed some very interesting horses for the future. This next level is with a more collected work including flying changes, and here you really starting to see the extra qualities or weaknesses.

For the 6 year old final the subsequent live comments were provided from German judge Christoph Hess, always with a good explanation for each mark, even though you might not always agree.

The podium was 🥇Zucchero, 🥈Revolution and 🥉Zhaplin Langholt, but from today’s performances it actually looked like Zhaplin Langholt, Zucchero and Revolution.

🥇Zucchero looks like not just the complete package with 3 super paces, but the willingness and natural power is also part of the package, and when watching him from the pricegivning the piaffe steps seems to available when needed.

Zucchero OLD 🇩🇪 nice from back active trot tour, forward flow for shoulder in, volte, half pass, super extended walk for a 10, but disturb for collected walk - looks like a 9, uphill 1st change with great quality, 2nd clearly from behind change, 3rd change super nice, becomes a bit short into 4th change but very nice, super extended trot, applauding before entering the centerline.

z.png

🥈Revolution and Andreas Helgstrand had one to beat Zucchero - the flying changes had to be correct today for the gold. Unfortunately still not 100% in order which was clearly reflected by the submission mark.

Revolution and Andreas Helgstrand - photo credit: Lily Forado

Revolution and Andreas Helgstrand - photo credit: Lily Forado

Revolution 🇩🇰 nice entering halt, this is X-factor for the trot tour, super balance, lengthening of the frame for extensions, super balance for shoulder in, volte, and really bend for half passes, bit to much let go of the rein for extended walk tour, very nice active collected walk, could collect a bit more for the pirouettes, super uphill canter, lack more clear flow for 1st change, 2nd better bit behind the hand, super 3rd change, power extension and transition back to collection, not clean 4th change, super extended trot, applauding final centerline.

🥉All time H2R favorite Danish Warmblood young horse is Zhaplin Langholt, so much expression, super balance and top qualities. For the preliminary test it was not a 100% polished test, but that fact Helgstrand also was aware of, and today he produced a test not just for a bronze medal, but more like a gold medal from H2R point of view.
