Day 1 impressions from European Championships in Gothenburg

Beautiful weather for day 1 at Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, where the atmosphere was pure excitement whether you were at the press center or catching up with the riders or trainers - everyone were excited and ready for the Championships to start.

As expected the Germans were strong from the start, and Helen Langehanenberg and Damsey proved why they were selected for the team with a 74,985% individual top score, followed by her teammate Dorothee Schneider with Sammy Davies Jr. with 74,585%.

Both German ladies delived strong tests and with their experiences they are able to make "the guided tour" quite easy for their horses. When you try to make a kind of re-view from the two test, it´s all about top timing. For Damsey a test without any technical issues, but where Helen maybe didn´t get the full respons in the piaffes today, and for Dorothee she was also showing a bit of compromise for her first piaffe, and like Helen she also managed to do her test without any major issues.

Swedish Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfvén and Rose Mathiesen were representing their country at home soil today. Unfortunately there were not many spectators at the huge grandstand at Ullevi Stadium to cheer on their country men. For Rose Mathiesen and Zuidenwind it became a test with to many issues along the way, keeping them away from a really steady and harmonius overall picture. Tinne managed to show her not very flashy or expressive Paridon Magi in a very safe and controlled way, and not exactly as high ranked as no 4. For sure her canter tour carries her test.

Diederik van Silfhout is a true championship rider. And it is a pleasure to watch how he has been able to develop Four Seasons over the last months. Diederik is able ask for maximum and Four Seasons respons him fully. Also Patrick van der Meer and Zippo were showing great form, eventhough Zippo also delivers his best, he is a horse with a kind of limited package, with maximum outcome for his rider.

The Danish team

It is no secret that the Danes are very high ranked if your asking at the press center. Talking about the medals Denmark is mentioned everytime for a top spot - of course behind the Germans.

So for that reason, but also from the form and qualities they are here at the Championships with, they will for sure be a major player when the final part of the team competition starts tomorrow.

From today´s two Danish combinations Agnete Kirk Thinggaard with Jojo AZ and Anna Zibrandtsen with Arlando the Danish national team coach Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein tells: "I´m very satisfied about today´s results. Agnete really had her ride of her life together with Jojo AZ, pity with the error at the zig-zag, as I have never seen Jojo as motivated and active as we saw him today. Anna Zibrandtsen and Arlando delivered a top job, unfortunately with a rider error by the two time tempies, but the rest was top quality. I must say day one here with the Danish team ranked as no 3, just makes day two even more exciting," says Nathalie.

And from young Anna Zibrandtsen herself was today´s test again something special. "Arlando is just a very very special boy, he always try to do his best."

Anna show Arlando in an easy steady and light form, where he just dances lightfooted all the way. And with the sharp eyes the average scoring from the extended walk was today 6,3, which was a very good and well deserved score.

Who will get the Silver and the Bronze tomorrow?

It is a very open Championship with Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden around the same results from today, and not to forget Britain which only showed one combinations today, and will show both Spencer Wilton/Super Nova and Carl Hester/Nip Tuck tomorrow.

Quote from Carl Hester about Danish Dufour and Cassidy after watching them at the training today: "No one can show an outline the way she can show her horse - it´s just amazing."

The owners are a big part of the sport

Behind every single combination there is a team

And for every single person behind the team - horse and rider, they all have a special position.

Going to a Championship like here at Gothenburg is a huge experience whether your a rider, trainer, groom or owner.

Unfortunately the owners are not included into the very important part of the Championships here in Gothenburg. Not included in the way that they have just very limited access to the warm-up areas, not being able to be a part of the rest of their team, standing direct a the arena helping with whatever needed, or just give the horse a pat when possible.

Not just about the sponsors of an event

A very frustrating situation for the teams, because being a rider with a horse owned by another person going to the Championships, is of course one of the very big things. And without owners many of the riders here in Gothenburg would not be able to be part of the Championships, so actually the owners are the main sponsors of our sport.

Familiarization in the main arena this morning

Ullevi.JPG

The Championships has started today in the heart of Gothenburg. Yesterday with light showers, and from the morning today nice sunny kind of autumn weather.

British horse out and Portuguese is ready to compete

As from yesterday one British horse Don Carissimo and one Portuguese horse were in holding box after the vet. check. Unfortunately Don Carissimo substains an injury and has been withdrawn from the competition, and the portuguese horse Bariloche is cleared and fit to compete. The schedule has not changed as Don Carissimo was the first after a break.

Familiarization

The official schedule said familiarization at 8.30, but at 8.30 the German team was in the arena and the Swedish team has already finished.

Yesterday evening the arena was ready for the riders, so many of them have already been in there doing a bit of familiarization.

German team

The German team looked very sharp, and especially Helen Langehanenberg with Damsey and Sönke Rothenberger with Cosmo showed super suppleness and nice relaxation. And as Sönke told after the familiarization: "I had a really good feeling about Cosmo, as he was very fresh and still very concentrated about the job today. The final preparations for our Grand Prix Wednesday will be with same kind of relaxed training as today, added with a couple of exercises from the test," tell Sönke Rothenberger.

Danish team

Danish team was without Agnete Kirk Thinggaard and Jojo AZ, as they have already been training yesterday evening in the arena, and will be out training later this afternoon, to fit it into their start Tuesday.

The other Danes, Anna, Anna and Cathrine, looked all very good. Anna Kasprzak and Pepe did a good training session with her trainer Andreas Helgstrand. Pepe looks motivated and supple. At the side of the arena Danish national coach Nathalie zu-Sayn Wittgenstein was of course also 100% focused about her riders. Cathrine Dufour and Atterupgaards Cassidy was also supported by her long time trainer at the side Rune Willum. Dufour and Cassidy show great training doing a bit of everything without any issues. Anna Zibrandtsen and Arlando were mostly trotting around the arena in a nice relaxed form, with Jan Brink keeping his eye on them. All Danish riders and the team coach are confident - "bring on the championships".

Dutch team

The Dutch team also looked good, especially Glock´s Voice and Edward Gal were shining.

The three remaining British combinations looked good. For Emile Faurie it looked as if was about making Lollipop sharp for the piaffes. Spencer Wilton and Super Nova looked relaxed and confident about the atmosphere. Watching Carl Hester it looked as if he was "talking" to Barney (Nip Tuck) about the concentration, and NOT looking at the few (about 20 spectators) far away behind the fence. Nip Tuck looked very fresh and as Carl subsequent stated "this was supposed to be my easy day"!

Spanish team

Spanish team, with chestnut Alcaide just walked by hand around the arena, and Severo with Deep Impact was also just using his time in the arena for a controlled walk. For Jordi Domingo with Mango Statesman it was also just a light stroll workout. The spanish successor Cristobal Belmonte with Diavolo used his time for a proper training session.

All Danish combinations ready and fit to compete - unfortunately GBR and POR has each one in holding box

Skærmbillede 2017-08-16 kl. 09.58.06.png

All Danish horses are fit to compete, together with the rest of the field except two horses.

Britains Don Carissimo (Gareth Hughes) and Portugals Bariloche (Vasco Mira Codinho) are in holding box. Re-inspection will be tomorrow morning (Monday) at 7.30.

Tomorrow morning there will be familiarization in the main arena from 8.30.

Sezuan afkom triumferede i Norge i går

10 års jubilæum for følfestivalen

Top foal collection for Danish Warmblood Elite auction

About 45 dressage foals are ready for the Danish Warmblood Elite auction, taking place Saturday 26th at 19.00.

This years collection is with great stamp of the Danish Warmblood gold medal Stallion and bronze medalist at the recent World Championships for young horses, 5-year-old Hesselhøj Donkey Boy. His offspring are long legged modern types with three supple paces.

Also the stallion Franklin shows his qualities through his offsprings. Expressive with power movements.

Easy to buy without being present at the auction

Even if your not able to be at Vilhelmsborg yourself during the action, Danish Warmblood auction team will of course try to accommodate if you have any special wishes, ex watch the foal on hard surface, at the stable etc.

This year there will be presentation of the entire collection via live stream at Clipmyhorse at 14.30 Saturday 26th. The stable will be open from 15.30-15.30, and Danish Warmblood team will also be available for information at "an office" at the stable area.

Any questions or to sign up for phone bit please feel free to contact Louise Ringsbo at +4561679493 and/or lrb@varmblod.dk.

Top colts from H2R point of view

Hesselhøj Dancing Donkey looks like one of the very attractive colts for the collection. This boy was already shown at a small video clip when he was nearly newborn, where he also made a huge impression both from his suppleness and expression "here I am". This is still the fact when watching this presentation video.

Svalegårds Hot Boy, shows his top qualities not just by himself but also through his breeding lines. This is definitely a colt for the future.

This colt from first crop by 1,2 mill euro Stallion Revolution, and recently rewarded with 5 x 10 at 4-year-old qualifier, shows qualities like his sire!

Åtoftens Fabrizio, modern type with easy movements of the ground.

Slangerupgaards Flottenheimer, light and modern type, with lovely natural ability to push of the ground and superb freedom of the shoulders.

Top fillies from H2R point of view

Finesse Langholt stands out with her powerful of the ground suppleness - looks like the top price by the fillies.

Borgbjergs Juliet looks like a very correct moving filly, with clear rhythm

No Italian and Irish combinations and withdraw from Dutch Emmelie Scholtens with Apache

Both Italian Ester Soldi with Harmonia and Irish Judy Reynolds with Vancouver K will not compete at Gothenburg, due to minor injuries for their horses.

And today another Dutch combination, 1st reserve combination Emmelie Scholtens with Apache has withdrawn from the Championships, due to a minor injury for Apache. The Dutch team will now use their 2nd reserve Patrick van der Meer with Zippo for their team.

Patrik Kittel ready with Delaunay

And Swedish Kittel has chosen to bring his 11-yr-old gelding Delaunay for the Championships, and will keep Deja as his reserve horse.

Changes at the Spanish and Dutch teams before the Europeans next week

Yesterday it was announced that Spanish combination Beatriz Ferrer-Salat and Delgado will not be at start, due to an accident for Beatriz herself at her house about two weeks ago, when she stumpled over one of her dogs in the night and injuried one of her ribs. As Beatriz stated on her Facebook, she is still not fit to compete in Gothenburg next week. Successor for Beatriz and Delgado is Cristobal Belmonte and Diavalo De Laubry.

Today with exit for Hans Peter Minderhoud and Glock´s Johnson as Johnson last week ripped of a shoe during the night in the box, and afterwards wore sore. Therefore reserve combination Emmelie Scholtens and KWPN stallion Apache will be at start next week.

Carlos unbeatable and Rothenberger without any individual medal

When watching Carlos and Hannah Erbe from their first steps at the warm-up arena, to their finishing halt by the test, they are just showing it their way.

From the warm-up Carlos is not a spectacular starter, and it looks like Hannah just gives him the time to warm up and getting supple is his body. And not until the very last minutes Hannah is not asking for any special moments during their warm up. But your not in doubt about the plan when watching them entering the arena to do their test. Lot´s of supple positive power for the entire trot and canter tour, as the walk tour becomes a bit limited with bit unbalanced moments. But still fully deserved GOLD winner today.

British Charlotte Fry has developed amazingly under the sharp eyes from her daily boss and trainer Anne van Olst. And together with Dark Legend they can celebrate a great 6th place for today´s final.

It´s been some exciting weeks for the young British rider, as she also just rode successfully at the World Championships for young horses in Ermelo, and now goes back home to Van Olst Horses to pack for Pavo Cup finals in Ermelo.

Until the very last competitor today German Semmieke Rothenberger and her Danish Warmblood mare Geisha were ready for their individual medal for this years championships. But no luck for them this year, as the bronze medal went to Dutch Jasmien de Koeyer with Esperanza.
