Close to personal best and very close run for the victory

Great to have Blue Hors Zack back in the arena after the very unfortunate exit of the CDI-W in Neumünster due to an hoof absence. Luckily he went then back home and the problem was solved immediately, and Daniel was able to keep on training for the next show, s´Hertogenbosch.

Unfortunately a couple of today’s judges still saw Werth ahead of Bachmann, like there were more judging disagreement for today’s Grand Prix.

H2R comments during the tests:

Emilio GER - good start, power diagonal, supple half passes, bit unbalanced into halt nice rein back, smooth extended trot, good transition to passage, lack bit more energy for piaffe, good relaxation for extended walk, becomes bit short left hind for collected walk, lack more flow for transition at M to passage, lack bit more forward search for 2nd piaffe, good transition to canter, some resistance on the bridle for extended canter, good zigzag, nice 1 times, good pirouettes, bit stocked transition at M, good extended trot, super final.

Blue Hors Zack DEN - super halt and forward, nice diagonal, nice carriage/suppleness for half passes, super halt with rein back, good extended trot, direct to passage, nice active piaffe with good transitions, super stretching for extended walk with nice over track, good collected walk, good transition at M, good 2nd piaffe becomes bit hind aides out of piaffe, good transition to canter, super 2 times, bit conservative extended canter, good zigzag, super forward 1 times, bit big 1st pirouette, 2nd more centered, good extended trot, good rhythm for piaffe tiny forward trend, super final.

Daily Mirror GER - good but very short halt, super balance diagonal, super nice half passes, tense rein back, super extended trot, nice passage, good piaffe lack bit energy, marching extended walk, good collected walk, bit travelling piaffe, nice passage, good transition to canter, ok 2 times, nice extended canter, good zig-zag, nice 1 times, lack bit balance for 1st pirouette, 2nd pirouette could show more clear canter jump, nice extended trot, lack bit clear transition out of final piaffe.

VIDEO - press conference with test rider Patrik Kittel after testing 24 Danish Warmblood Young Horses

For the second time international top rider Patrik Kittel was testing the best 5 year old horses for Danish Warmblood Young Horse Championship.

And ones again Kittel did a brilliant job. His way of testing each young horse is the same. He is asking the same from every horse, and in just 8 minutes it´s his job to judge the rideability and the capacity.

Unfortunately two of this years young horses did show so much tension under Kittel, that it did not make any sense to finish the testing, and he jumped off with the very disappointing message for the rider, but very fair, obvious and professional decision.

Cathrine Dufour clinic Thursday evening in Herning

Photocredit all photos @Benjamin Christensen

Cathrine Dufour took the audience into her own dressage universe during the clinic she gave Thursday evening in Herning.

The arena was fully packed - every single seat was sold out for this years clinic with Danish international top rider Cathrine Dufour.

“Do you really think people are interested coming to my clinic?” was Cathrines first comment when asking her to do the Thursday evening clinic in Herning. And for sure a lot of people were interested in listening to Cathrine Dufour, as we already know her top skills in the saddle.

First combination was 16 year old junior rider Kristian Würtz Green with 9 year old Bøgegårdens Santiago. Cathrine and Kristian never trained together before, so Wednesday evening they had a training session, where they obviously were trying to get to know each other, to be prepared for the clinic to show some of Cathrines basic training methods.

It was great to watch them from the sideline. The way Cathrine were interacting with Kristian all the time, not only one way communication, but dialogue about how she would try to solve a certain problem or challenge, all the way where you get the feeling that Cathrine will make sure that Kristian understands and get the correct feeling from the advices. During the clinic it was also about being able to change tempo for each exercise and also making the horse quicker in order to respond to the aides, and use of a strap in front of the saddle in order to control/support a certain exercise.

For the clinic Cathrine also brought her long time student Sanne Svendsen with her young Grand Prix mare Hannah Montana W. Together they were showing some of the more advanced stuff, and all the time building up from the basic, and at the same time telling about the challenges and difficulties reaching the most correct outcome.

Corners

For the second part of the clinic Dufour was in the saddle of her now 9 year old Bohemian. They’ve already had a successful first season at international Grand Prix level last year.

Here Cathrines focus was “corners”. She told the importance of being able to ride and use the corners for the training and of course in the competition situations. Every single horse she has under saddle going through the same warm up system wether they are 4 year old or 10 year old.

It was a very alive and honest Cathrine who shared a lot of interesting details with the audience, and after each rider she went to the spectators to answer a couple of questions.

A great evening where Cathrine in a very easy way was telling about her way of training her students and horses.

Two champions scoring 10 (Danish Warmblood Young Horse Championship)

Part of Danish Warmblood news today

Screen+Shot+2019-03-10+at+23.29.03.jpg

Both champions of the Danish Warmblood Young Horse Championship in dressage and show Jumping earned the maximum score of 10 for capacity from the test riders, Patrik Kittel and Lars Bak Andersen

The competitors in the Danish Warmblood Young Horse Championship in dressage and show Jumping in Herning have qualified through regional shows in October-November and therefore the championship in Herning works like a final. The young horse competing in Herning are the focus of much attention as the best of them will potentially represent Denmark at the FEI/WBFSH World Championships in Lanaken/Belgium and Ermelo/The Netherlands later this year.

Swedish team rider in dressage, Patrik Kittel stated that the overall level of Danish 5-year old dressage horses was sky-high and that he has ridden a future Olympic horse or two. Patrik Kittel literally said that the mare Queenparks Wendy was out of the scale and he would like to be able to give a higher score than 10, but she earned 10 for rideability as well as for capacity.
– Wow this trot is great and this I want to take this horse home. Holy Moly, this canter is insane, and she does anything I ask from her. Honestly, I think I have never ridden such a talented horse before.
Queenparks Wendy scored 974 points which is one of the highest total scores ever in the young horse championship in Herning. It looks as if the Danish selection committee for the world championships in Ermelo will have fun selection the Danish team this year.

Champion of Blue Hors Young Horse Championship in Dressage:

Queenparks Wendy by Sezuan/Blue Hors Soprano
Bred by: Knud Gosmer, Dronninglund
Owned by: Helgstrand Dressage, Vodskov and Chateau Fontain, France
Rider: Andreas Helgstrand

VIDEOS - The Danes and Severo rocked Boxen in today's CDI4 Grand Prix freestyle

The strong Danes

This years CDI4 became like a small Danish Championship in Herning. Top motivated, top fit and top competitive Danish combinations, and with a sharp debut from 9 year old Danish Warmblood top mare Fiontini with “Denmarks” Severo Jurado Lopez.

I was a great great comeback for Cathrine Dufour with Atterupgaards Cassidy winning both the Grand Prix and today’s freestyle with top scores and top performances. Looked like a very “hungry” combination going for it all the way both days, even though Cathrine has become very ill during the event with some kind of stomach flue. But as expected she managed as a pro, but she told that after her test she was nearly not able to get of Cassidy by herself.

Don O and Daniel were shining both days too. The young stallion looked so confident for both classes, and after the Grand Prix Daniel Bachmann told that he now really gets the feeling that Don O getting the routine, strength and overview during the entire test. For today’s freestyle there were just a few minor issues.

International CDI4 debut with huge imprint from Spanish Severo Jurado Lopez with his 9 year old super mare Fiontini. Grand Prix debut friday with 75,913% and today with 80,060% (watch both tests below and interview after the Grand Prix).

Danish Warmblood Stallion of the Year 2019: Skovens Rafael

Screen+Shot+2019-03-10+at+23.21.54.jpg

Danish Warmblood’s 22nd Stallion of the Year title has been appointed to the Grand Prix dressage stallion Skovens Rafael that was honoured and celebrated by an enthusiastic crowd in Herning

As a foal Skovens Rafael by Blue Hors (Glock’s) Romanov/Blue Hors Don Schufro (bred by Kirsten B. Hansen og Jens Lund Pedersen) was sold at the DWB Elite Foal Auction to foreign investors and he grew up at Blue Hors stud in Danmark. As a 3-year-old he became a premium stallion and at the time the most expensive young stallion ever sold at the Spring Auction in Herning. Rafael is out of a dam line that has produced several top horses, and his breeding line Blue Hors Romanov/Blue Hors Don Schufro/Zorro Z is a string of international Grand Prix stallions.

His new owners, Lotte and Per Skjærbæk & Lotte Lindgreen have developed Rafael into a superb dressage horse. Ridden by Lotte Skjærbæk he won the Danish young dressage horse championship as a 4-year-old and was a finalist at the FEI/WBFSH world championships in Verden at the age of 5 and 6. Lotte and Rafael have developed into a successful pair at international Grand Prix level and became Nordic champions in 2017.

Not only in international sport, but also in breeding Skovens Rafael have placed himself on the world map. In Danish Warmblood he holds one of the highest dressage breeding values because of his many very rideable and talented offspring. Also in Sweden, Skovens Rafael is highly valued as a sire and his most famous young offspring at the moment is the Swedish bred stallion Springbank II VH.

The owners of Skovens Rafael were presented with flowers, a statuette and a painting of their stallion.

Patrik Kittel - “winner skull”

IMG_9808.jpeg

Swedish national team anchor Patrik Kittel continues his chronicles on Ridenews. He brings up an important theme with having a winning mentality - something you achieve, not born with. In Swedish the term “vinnarskalle” literally “winner skull” can best be translated into  a winning mentality, a positive competitiveness.

I listened to a radio interview on Swedish sport channel Radiosporten with my national team colleague Therese Nilshagen. The reporter asked Therese who she thought had the most winning mentality in the dressage national team. I was equally happy and surprised when I heard her answer: PatrikKittel.

Throughout my career I have been told the reverse. "Patrik Kittel has no winning mentality"

I have always been told that I do not have a winning mentality but for example Jeanna Högberg has it – a winning mentality. No discussion there, Jeanna is great at entering the course and give everything.

How does it rwork really? Are you born with a killer instinct?

I have thought a lot about it. How do you get a winning mentality , what is it that determines if you will be the one who wins and take what you deserve? Is it a trait you as a rider are born with? Do you get it because you have parents with money and resources to support you? Are the early successes during the pony years making all the difference?

Hard way for me

I have always had a lot of performance anxiety before a competition. I have been nervous about competing and performing on the course. I can still be anxious today, but I have more and better tools to handle it. But the first few years were difficult, it took time before I became a rider that people wanted to work with. During my upbringing in the equestrian world, there were some things that trainers and others often repeated.

I was often told that I couldn't ride.

That I wasn't good enough.

That I didn't have enough money.

That I didn’t have enough talent and prospect in me.

In the end, it takes its toll on you

In the beginning I shook it off and told myself that everything was ok, anyway. I clung to my rubber duck, managed the self-doubt as best it could. The rubber duck has been with me since the beginning, it helps me to focus, laugh and make yet another effort.

Then I moved abroad and worked. I was in a place where I was told every day for several months: You are useless! You can't ride, you have no feeling, you are not right for this!

Of course this didn't just happen just to me, many have experienced the same thing. Unfortunately, I'm not alone at all having thisexperience. It doesn't really help that people around you urge you to shake it off, the voice of doubt has finally entered your interior.

Tough consequences

You have come to a point when you begin to believe the voices, you start to doubt yourself. It makes you ride worse, ponder more. You dare not open up, you dare not perform. You have entered into a position where you are always afraid of making mistakes. Mentally you tell yourself that you don’t have a winning mentality , you have reached a point when you cannot fight against the negative thoughts.

Often, the environment meets this situation with quick conclusions and urges you to take action: Why not leave your toxic environment or move on to another job?

It's not that easy. Me and many with me have invested too much to want to give up, lots of time. Perhaps the negative influence is a person you look up to very much, your greatest idol since several years back. You don't see any wrongs with them - just with yourself. It's not that easy to give up and just leave, it feels like an even greater loss. To give up, what a looser as well.

I got out of my situation, moved, worked on and struggled. Over time, I have become a strong person mentally, today I am in a completely different place.

How come my students are successful?

The first piece of the puzzle on the way to getting a winning mentality is that you have to believe that it can be achieved. From the start, some students have a lot of faith in themselves and a plus balance on the self-confidence account, which is good. Other students have received these negative reviews too many times so that it has stuck. Some previous trainers have flung things out like: You are too fat! You lack feeling! You only have money, you just buy the wrong horses!

In the end, this has etched itself in as truths among these students. They have lost all chances of becoming a winner in that situation. My job is to get them back to the situation that they are equipped with a winning mentality.

How do I do it?

I have learned a lot from Kjell Enhager, my mental coach for several years. What I try to do for my students is to help them build up a plus balance on their self-confidence account.

They should add plus to their account - collect on good things they do, good memories, the right feeling in the saddle. This makes you develop your winning mentality.

For me, the winning mentality is that you believe in yourself enough to convince yourself to think that you can do it. In itself it develops the winning mentality.

An ongoing work

Most people think that when you are at my level you do not have to continue working on it. I can hear that "now has reached such a level that now it is no problem anymore."

Although I have had a lot of success today, I hear these comments around me.

People want to say about me that I do not fully commit myself on the course, that I do not provide for me. They say that I am better at training horses is to compete on their own. Although I know it is BULLSHIT, there is something in my subconscious mind that takes on. It takes me back to my younger self when people hammered into me that I didn't die, if only for a short second. In spite of everything I achieved, it still does. Still, I quickly get a sense of doubt - maybe I'm not a winner skall anyway, maybe I miss that little extra?

Young people need support

When you are developing horses and young riders, mental support is needed. Someone who can make you believe in yourself, someone who builds you up, who makes you think your goal is achievable. Maybe a coach, maybe a coach, someone who gives constructive criticism. You need someone in your environment who believes that you can actually perform.

Everyone can become a winner

The winner skull is for me not a specific characteristic that you are born with, something you have or are not equipped with. It is a mood, just like talent it can be developed with the help of knowledge and training. It is like a muscle that can be trained and improved, just as your talent becomes more refined the more you learn.

And, it's something you have to work with always to keep. No matter how good it goes, periodically, someone who makes a hurtful comment.

Triggers and Thieves

There are a thousand things that can hurt, from comments about your riding, the horse or how you got to your place today. A good day, you may not at all take care of you, another day so it hurts badly and the doubts begin to spin. What do you do then and how do you travel after getting such a thief type? You have to work with it forever, and that means you work to get better. There is a stimulus in that "I will show them" too, that will make you struggle more.

My best advice for getting up

I searched for things that gave me security, my family and my mental coach as KjellEnhager. He has been my coach for 20 years, three words from him put me in the right mood because I trust him. Find someone you trust.

When I need to get up, I watched movies where it went best. I watched movies with the very best riders on the Olympics. I found things that removed my own doubts

Anyone who rides, competes, trains can end up in this situation. You can't just shake off, but you have to have methods to get out of the depression sweat. Look for your personal triggers that will help you up.

My concrete advice when it happens:

Listen to your family

Be with your animals - they see when you are sad but are then even more comforting

Take the help of a mental coach or some other safe person

Write down good moments so you can relive them

Look at photos with positive memories

Everything to break the thinking that "I am no winner I am a looser". One day when you find your own triggers and you can make yourself strong again then you are a winner in my eyes.

A pretty clear picture already after day 1 at Danish Warmblood Young Horse Championship in Herning

1.jpg

Today’s presentation and judging of the young horses does not count for the final results, as it is only for the program with owner rider and test rider part that counts. (60% for test with own rider and 40% with the marks from test rider).

From today’s presentation it was a clear picture of which horses being able to be in top also when finishing Sunday with the last part of the test riding from Patrik Kittel.

The excitement before today’s first part of the final was with huge expectations for the Sezuan offspring, as he was represented with a total of 15 offsprings out of 35 starters. Unfortunately far from all of them lived up to the expectations. All very rideable, with good trot and canter as their best movement, while the walk was their weakest gait.

The top with Queenspark Wendy and Tophøjs Florentina together with Elverhøj´s Raccolto and Søgaard Bon Royal looks like horses that will be able to stay in the top and show great performances for the program (5 year old preliminary test) tomorrow. Impressive mares sharing the first spot over night, and with two super nice sport horses as 3rd and 4th.

One of the horses missing in the top of the field is for sure Skoven Tzarina which the judges today gave just 6,5 for the walk, and from the sideline looked more like a 7,5 from H2R point of view.

Tomorrow at 11.30 starts 5 year old preliminary test with own rider.

(Nogen må have spottet dig til opgaven).

Placed 4th in Prix St. Georg, 5th in Intermediaire I and victory today

Great weekend for former Danish rider Kristine Møller, now riding for Luxembourg with her 9 year old Trakehner mare Standing O´vation by Imperio / Consul, owned by Jens Thorsen, Gestüt Pallerhaff in Luxembourg.

Its always been a mare to keep an eye on from H2R point of view. Top expressive, elegant with outstanding trot, super walk and good canter, and now really settling in with some very solid qualities for the canter work.

Sharp and correct test for the two first days with just a tiny issue for a single change each day, but with convincing power, suppleness and power where it is required.

Kristine has through the years been educating Standing O´vation, and participated at WCYH in Ermelo as both 6 year old and 7 year old, and won the consolation final as 7 year old. Last year with debut at international small tour level and today with personal best freestyle victory with 76,785%.
